I had lived in St. Cloud for almost 12 years and in my opinion you should run from that place as fast as you can! Racist? Oh Yeah that place is racist. I am a bi-racial person who attended HS there and in the first week my locker was set on fire and I was assaulted. The school did nothing except make excusses about the areas "growing pains" Then I attended the only Catholic HS in town and was very unimpressed. While I was there they fired 2 teachers for being gay and another for attempting to start a GLBT student support group. If you need first hand accounts of the intollerance, bigotry, and all out hate embraced by the community just go onto the local papers website, sctimes.com, and read the comments of the good citizens of SC.

The only minorities I knew that didn't get harassed were white-parent adopted Asian girls. Last year at Apollo a local HS a soccer game was almost canceled because "fans" were yelling racial slurs and throwing things at the minority players. SCSU had multiple swastikas drawn around the campus for 2 months straight last year And since the first of 2010 anti-Islamic/Somali posters were posted around town targeting Somali owned businesses and homes.

Do not put your child in an environment that automatically assumes the worst in them. Do not raise your child in a place that the majority feel justified in their bigotry until someone proves their stereotypes wrong. Your child deserves better than that place.

Of course there are those who are nice and open minded unfortunately they usually stay silent or are drowned out by the infamous "bad apples". I moved because my wife was going to have a child. I even took a pay cut to get away from that place. Do yourself and child a favor and leave before your family becomes a target.

1. When was your locker set on fire? What year?

2. Cathederal is an excellent school. Look at the test scores. Tell us more about these fired teachers....

3. The Times chat board is a low tech message board where people spread scandalous lies to prove a point and further an agenda. Or there are there just to be a jerk. Have you read the posts on C-D? Obviously not.

4. No Apollo soccer fan has ever thrown garbage at a minority player. I personally know the coach. That never happened.

5. The SCSU Swastikas were done by a kid in a dorm as a bet. "The SCSU Swastika" Bandit will not strike again. Every news channel covered the story. But when they heard it some stupid dorm kid and not a hate group, the dropped the story faster than a piece of hot coal. We all know it was some prankster.

6. I hadn't heart about the anti-Somali posters. What group is responsible? What makes you think some locals did it? (If it happened) Do you have any links?

I have a feeling you are not being honest. Tell us more.

^Even if some of that WAS mis-interpreted, it doesn't mask the issue of racial intolerance in this country -- and St. Cloud is certainly no exception. Given the fact that it (like most of greater MN) is predominantly white and has been forever, I'm sure there are in fact "growing pains" for people who are not accustomed to the change.

1. It was my sophomore year, first semester, 1997

2. I will not give the names of the teachers who were dismissed. That is not my place nor does it negate thar it happened.

3. The ScTimes us one of the only local papers and their online edition does provide locals a place to comment on local stories and issues. If you look on almost ever story involving a minority good or bad there are racially charged negative comments being made.

4. I was at the soccer game so I know it happened. The Sctimes and WJON both reported on it also.

5. Only one of the SCSU swastikas were admitted to and the student who came forward was a foreign student. That still leaves all of the others unsolved.

6 The anti-Islamic posters were put up by a guy from this area. He came forward to claim his bigotry soon after they were reported to police. The Mayor held a townhall meeting a week or so ago to discuss the rising tensions in the community.

You attempted to deny any and all accounts that I originally posted. Even going so far as to suggest I am a liar. I have not only witnessed racism in St Cloud but also lived with it for 12 years. Do not try and tell me or anyone else that it didn't happen. As I said before to the OP. Do not raise a child here who is a minority. Based on my experience and those of every other non-adopted minority I knew there your child will not be met with open arms but with stereotypes and intollerance.

I don't think the poster misinterpreted those incidents. I'm saying the poster is lying. I'm bi-racial...I'm very sensitive to my surroundings and what people say. It doesn't mean I always get offended. Being a minority a person becomes very adept at reading people. I've lived in St Cloud for 20 years and I'm involved in the community. So I know a little bit about this area.

I'm sorry, but I don't believe you. BTW, I'm a minority who has lived here for 20 years.

Some St Cloud property management companies will not rent to Africans and Middle Easterners because of complaints about the smell of their food which permiates the halls and other apartments.

Do you all think this is discrimination? Or are they protecting the rights of others who find the smell repulsive?

So you're saying fans were throwing things at minority players and yelling racial slurs. I know there is still a lot of racism out there, but if that actually did happen that would be a huge news event and those fans would not only have been kicked out of the game, but had legal issues that would go along with it. You are saying the people stereotype against minorities, but you yourself are stereotyping by saying the majority of people in St. Cloud are bigots. And you obviously haven't met the majority of people in St. Cloud.

They don't openly state this, do they? Is this a common issue, or just one or two companies or buildings?

I would never knowingly rent from such a place. It most definitely is discrimination. Freedom from smells is not a right.

While I'm sure most St. Cloud residents are not racist, the city definitely needs to take a stand (and they are having recent town hall meetings, so they do seem to be trying...) against the sort of ongoing racist incidents that have given St. Cloud a reputation, fair or not, as being an intolerant, bigoted kind of place. It might only represent the views of a vocal minority, but if so, that's all the more reason for the larger community to come together to vividly demonstrate to their own residents and to the state and country that this sort of behavior (the recent posters, the swastikas, etc.) are not acceptable.

I agree with you that it probably is discrimination, and that it is not a right to smell. It would have to be looked at however if it inhibited the landlord from being able to rent out otherwise very rentable units.
