You also have to remember that not everyone is comfortable with diversity. Not because they are ignorant, or biggots, or what-have-you, they are just uncomfortable being around different types of people. Mind you, humans have a huge tendancy to sticking to what they recognize or are familiar with. Why do you think mainly attractive people have attractive friends- Why do you think that kids who enjoy basketball tend to have friends that share the same joy of basketball, rather than being close to kids who tend to like books or something. I think many St. Cloudians saw the rapid change of diversity (as St. Cloud State starting seeing giant increases in international students, and the flow of Somali and other east africans during the 1990s)
Cool, I don't care about Malls or Wal-Mart Supercenters man. Couldn't care less.
You should go venture the city more, as there is MUCH more than 'Division'.
Every mid sized city in the USA has a strip similar to Division. I live in Duluth now, and its' Central Entrance.
Why are you comparing Crossroads Mall to Ridgedale? 2 totally different malls. Ridgedale isn't a regional mall. It's a locational mall within a metro area, Crossroads serves the largest land-area of consumers than any mall in the USA. (Based on the question: Which is the closest mall you tend to do major shopping?) For most people in the Twin Cities it's probably Southdale, Ridgedale, Rosedale, Maple Grove, Maplewood, MOA, Brookdale. There are people that live in eastern South Dakota that choose Crossroads as their "closesr major retailing mall". The malls in the TC are designed to cater a much different and tighter demographic than Crossroads.
Wait Park, Sauk Rapids and Sartell are all cities 7000-15000 people in Central Minnesota, what do you want, nightclubs and sporting events? Like there is SOO much to do in Rogers buddy, Rogers is 5 minutes from Arbor Lakes. Why would Wal Mart put money into a store that only sees 1,000,000 visitors a year in comparison to 15,000,000? It's a dumb investment. They are heads of giant corporations, they aren't dumb. It's still the same product that's inside...
So, your arguments are that St. Cloud is a strip, doesn't have a Supercenter Walmart, and the mall 'sucks'?
Wow, Sounds like almost ANYWHERE in the USA.
Ok, I was trying to say Like big malls and such, and simply that the crossroads mall isn't big enough for me. St. Cloud is also the largest city in central Minnesota and it doesn't have a walmart supercenter, and it is always busy and crowded and a nightmare, even at 11pm. I was trying to say I personally don't care for St. Cloud and was trying to say I would rather live in Minneapolis. I never said anything about Rogers. There isn't a ton of off Division, Waite Park is basically nothing, I used to live in Waite Park, I could see the top of Scheels from where I lived. Sauk Rapids and Sartell don't have much either, but I love the hillyness of Sauk Rapids, and both Sauk Rapids and Sartell have a better school district then St. Cloud.
and you're saying St. Cloud shouldn't have a walmart supercenter? What about Little Falls, Hutchinson, Buffalo, Willmar, Owatonna, Mankato, Marshall? St. Cloud is bigger then all of those... And don't tell me to go to Target, I usually do, but a lot of Walmarts junk is cheaper. And im sorry Im not rich enough to shop at other places.
Yeah, I could see the tension between St. Cloud townies and new Somali residents, but I never saw anything harsh, but that's me. You actually went to school there. I made a lot of Somali friends while in St. Cloud, many that I am still very close with.
I mean, come on, a town of 60,000 residents, pretty isolated in farming community of Central Minnesota, and a huge influx of east african immigrants comes to town, I can imagine the head scratching.
I think the tensions between Somalians and some St Cloud residents has nothing to do with the color of their skin, is not a backlash against them because it is feared they are Muslim terrorists, but rather about the Muslim religion rule of leaving your work station at exact times to pray.
This has been in the news a lot ( lawsuits, opinion pages, postings on the St Cloud Tomes etc)
As far as the Somalians go, many of their practices conflict with usual work place rules and regulations.
On the other side, Somalians are legals and very rarely get their names in the paper for breaking the law.

I guess it would be frustrating not having a wal mart supercenter if that's what you want, but you should really base your willingness to live or move somewhere based on public service provision compared to tax burden. How much do you pay in taxes, and what do you get in return. Your taxes go to Police and Fire Protection, Water&Sewer, Street Maintenance, Schools, City cleanliness, infrastructure, etc.
St. Cloud has nice streets (for the most part, come live in Duluth, it makes me really miss STC) St. Cloud has a very respectable Police Force, which has a lot to deal with since St. Cloud is a regional hub to visitors from places such as Avon, Albany, Foley, St. Augusta, Sartell, Sauk Rapids, Clearwater, Clear Lake, Annandale, St. Joe, and is home to over 20,000 college students, that usually AREN'T permanent residents. Streets in St. Cloud are clean, other than Southside and maybe East. Water and Sewer isnt a problem. And the City just built a new library and police headquaters. There are hundreds of residents of the city that have PhDs.
So, maybe sometimes look at what you have rather than what you don't. I mean the Twin Cities are just a 45 minute drive east on 94~
WHAT!? 45 MINUTES!? Not unless you're going 100mph with no traffic. It's more like a 70-75 minute drive.
Yeah, you must be one of those annoying slow Minnesota drivers.
I grew up in St. Michael, and when I would go home from College I could get from my Apartment in St. Cloud to my home in St. Michael in 40 minutes, easily. Go 80 MPH on 94!
From my home in St. Michael I can get to DT Mpls for Twins games in 25 minutes.
Sometimes you passive agressive Minnesotans need to pull up your skirts and drive! What are you afraid of? I just passed a guy last night on my way back up to Duluth, he was going 63 in the left lane! on 35! in outside of Wyoming! come on man!
