I can't believe that they have a Hilton downtown now. It seems like a skyscraper compared to the rest of downtown. The area around campus has alot more stores and apartments than it did 10 years ago. IMO there is alot of traffic there for a city its size. I suppose from the colleges and people doing their shopping there from other areas. There are usually quite a few Iowa license plates in the River Hills Mall parking lot.

Geez, how long has Mettlers been there? I could never work up the courage to go to Metties when I lived there. Too many bad stories from people that have been there.

It wasn't a bad place at all when I was in school. The dancers were nice, but in all seriousness the burgers were also pretty good.

(3) I didn't have a lot of money to spend on entertainment or food.

(4) Most of my interests revolved around friends and locations on campus, and I didn't really spend all that much time downtown except for visits to Don's Hobby, the Oleander Saloon, Mettler's (for the burgers, of course!), and sometimes Skank's Nightclub in North Mankato.

It might be very different 30 years later, and I know my needs today would be quite different.
Glad you liked it there when you went to school

Me, too. I don't regret choosing Mankato State (or Minnesota State, I guess) at all.

For what it's worth (probably not much), I'm not a fan of Mankato. I think it's overrated. The hilly scenery is nice, and the town isn't bad, but with all of the awards it's won and how people seem to think it's this awesome town, it leaves much to be desired. It's really an average town and kind of run down in spots. There are a lot of abandoned storefronts downtown, of course, that may be due to the recession. As far as Minnesota college towns go, Northfield is the best.
