Question for anglers of all experience levels. How do you rate the freshwater fishing in Minnesota?

Lately it's been pretty sad on my lake that used to be excellent for Walleye and Sun Fish (I'm not Mr. Super Angler, I just like throwin' on some leeches and hangin' out)

I've heard it's been because of cold water temps.

"Freshwater fishing" covers a lot of territory, as does "Minnesota".

I would say there's a wide variety of fish and a very large number of quality places in the state in which to catch such fish, but there's a huge difference between smelting, bow hunting carp, using a pole and bobber to catch bluegills and other sunnies (or bullheads), trolling for walleye, sitting in a fishhouse catching perch through the ice, or fishing for snakes (small northerns) off a rockpile.

Lots of fishing going on shores of Lake Superior between Duluth and Two Harbors. Area rivers up the Northshore hold the most promise from Lester River, French River, and Knife River, most guys will get one or two Coho Salmon (nice huge fish beautiful) and also fishing for Steelhead also kown as Lupers.
The fishing was the best several weeks ago, but it is still hot and heavy now.
Ice on the smaller lakes may not be safe anymore, like Boulder, Rice and others, predict ice out sometime in mid April
Many guys are out in the morning, and all day, those Salmon are NICE.
Many walleye lakes including northern, bass, sunnies others.
Fishing in Minnesota...What brings you to Ohio? Damned if I know...
Minnesota has very nice fishing

I'd say the fishing is great in the state, you just have to know where to go. If I want to catch walleye I'm going to a different lake than if I'm out for northern or a different area of the large lakes. I live in Saint Louis County so I'm fortunate to have many great lakes in just a short drive.

Come on, it's the land of 10,000 lakes (well, there are over 15,000 actually). Best in the metro area are Forest, White Bear and Bald Eagle, IMO.

Some lakes are stocked, I'm sure.

Making sense of stocking reports: Minnesota DNR

News Releases: Minnesota DNR (http://news.dnr.state.mn.us/index.php/2010/01/07/dnr-to-make-changes-to-trout-program/ - broken link)

Etc...

Hello all, I ended up doing a fishing trip to MN earlier this month. I just got through updating another thread with a report from that vacation, which was really nice and based on my first MN fishing experience, I would say the fishing is "good" to "outstanding." We were at a medium sized lake in the Aitkin area. Spent about five days there and had a nice experience. We caught a variety of fish, including nize sized walleye, bass and pike. Also lots of tiny fish, including some tiny bass and walleye that were about the size of Rapala's.

We only fished during the day. No early morning fishing and no nighttime fishing. The daytime fishing was kind of slow sometimes, but made up for it when we hooked into the larger fish.

Highlights were:
* 27" pike
* three 20" walleye
* 4lb largemouth bass
* bunch of large fish of unknown type that got away and never got the chance to see them
* several large perch

additionally, of course, were some medium sized and smaller fish.
