Go along Penn Avenue, north of Highway 55 & sound of Broadway. In that area, beware of bullets over broadway, though.

I felt the same way for a long time (I moved from NYC in 1999) but I did find my stylist Kiki Realistic Manes 401A Lake St I live in Columbia Heights so Minneapolis is not that big of a Hike. The salon is off of Lkae and Grand. Kiki has a has and uses her Curling Iron Stove. my hair is not permed and she starightens me out perfectly. My cut is always fierce. You can reach her at 612-598-1671 also she will be in the hair in Bloomington MN Aug 19 at the Holiday Inn off of 494E and 34th ave. I think this is a perfect place to see a showcase of Mpls hair stylist. Good luck. If you do go to Kiki tell her that Tat refered you.

I went to the Aveda training salon in Northeast Minneapolis, off Central for a relaxer and cut. You set an appointment and the prices are reasonable. They do coloring and massages too. Because it is a beauty school they take a long time--but they do a good job, and really work to make your hair look right.
Hair Is and Talk of the Town have a good reputation too and specialize in black hair. Hair Is also does eyelashes and wig styling. The neighborhood is in Whittier and has always seemed safe to me.

I need a touch up!!!!
2Blessed2stress (or anyone who can help me!),
I am new in town, and am desperately seeking a good stylist who will help me keep my hair healthy and fabulous. Your stylist sounds amazing; could you possibly send me the contact information? I'd really appreciate it!

There are a few black salons off of Lake Street in South Minneapolis. I can't remember the cross streets off hand but if you go west on Lake from Hiawatha you should see atleast two of them before you hit uptown.

Does anyone know someone that does sew in's? I'm from Detroit and I've never had a problem finding a stylist. There are shops on every corner in the D. For some reason, Minneapolis is lacking good stylist. I'm looking for someone that can do a weave and have it looking like it's actually yours. I like the soft look, not a lot of gel or spritz. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
