Hinckley and surrounding areas are very rednecky. Small town with not much to do, and I have to agree with the person that said something about being a white trash area. I was in Pine City one day and I could not believe how redneck some of those people were, there is a dirty lake called Cross Lake right in town and a bunch of redneck boats floating in the dirty lake. It is a weird area.

Default define redneck / white trash

I came across this thread out of pure curiousity. I'll freely admit to never having lived in Hinckley or the surrounding area, I've only passed through; but the judgemental tone of some of the posters also seems to be coming from outside observers. What exactly makes something redneck or white trash? If a man chooses to pursue a trade rather than get a college degree and stays in his small town to do it, does that make him a redneck? If he lives in a mobile home because it is affordable is he white trash too? What if he votes, is an active member of his community, and goes to church? Does this work in his favor? Does loving to fish count against him? What is a redneck boat? Is a well-maintained high end bass boat redneck? What if the best boat he can afford is an olive drab flat bottom skiff powered by a electric trolling motor? Is he now a redneck / white trash?

It seems to me the poster of the original question for this thread would be much better served / helped if people stuck to facts rather than judgemental generalizations.

Judgemental!? My friend, I have been to the area many times and it is not just a matter of what people do or where they work. I have had some of the most unwelcoming experiences in my life in the Hinckley/Pine City/Rush City area, people that look at you with that "what the hell are you doing here" kind of attitude. Not to mention, the closed-mindedness, intolerance and ignorance of the locals.

"As the Pine City LGBT community meets for a picnic today, several residents opposed to homosexuality will meet to protest what they see as an "incorrect" lifestyle according to the Star Tribune"

This should tell you something about the area

Ah, now despite your negative tone, I do not have a problem with this post as you are citing specific examples of your experience! I think hearing an account such as this is much more helpful to jmcowling in gathering info about Hinckley.

Hinckley is a small town (~6,000?) located about half-way between Minneapolis and Duluth. When my family drove between those two points, we always stopped at the White Castle there. The town also has a good bakery (Toby's) and a sizable casino.

One interesting thing about Hinckley is that due to their location, their FM radio dial is full of stations from Minneapolis, Duluth, St. Cloud, NW WI, and even the Brainerd Lakes Area.

I just moved to Pine City from Duluth and my wife and I like the town. It is small but there are stores to shop in and a couple good restaurants. Real estate is not absurdly overpriced like in Duluth and the Metro. We just baught a brand new house on the outskirts and compared to our 90 year old house in Duluth, we love it!

Personally I would not live in Hinckley. It is much smaller than Pine City: pop. 1,000 vs 3,000. It is also much more run down than Pine City.

I commute 20 minutes every day for my job to the north. However, I can be in the Metro to the south from our house in around an hour. Wouldnt want to do that for work but it is fine to do for shopping, going out, getting involved in clubs etc.

The locals that have been here their whole lives are not bad people if you talk to them, however, they are generally not used to newcomers so will wonder who you are if you dont take the initiative to make friends. Pine city is starting to get away from that, however. The city is still growing even though the housing market sucks right now and many people are moving up here from the Metro.

Clayton

You seem to have it all figured out. I see you are from Eagan. You see hunters, boats, mullets, and snowmobile jackets, all over the S.Metro. Eagan, Lakeville, and Burnsville, all have that redneck element.

Hinkley is the half-way mark between Duluth and Minneapolis. They're famous for Tobi's restraunt with giant cinnamon rolls. LOL Known for them for years before Cinnabon came on the market.

St Cloud isn't such a big city. If she's going to be in St. Cloud, why not move there? It's not that close to the Metro area of Minneapolis and St. Paul. From what I've seen, St. Cloud is a nice place to live.

If she's going to be in the Metro area and not St. CLoud, she could live in Forest lake. Closer to Minneapolis but far enough away to still be away from the crime. Forest lake is between Hinkley and Minneapolis on I-35

Pine City is a drug hole. The only thing it has to offer is drugs. The only jobs appear to be drug dealers since I can video the drug deals going on from all 4 sides of my redneck/white trash trlr. The manager gets complaints about the drug dealers and just looks the other way. There is no way I would ever suggest anyone ever live in Pine City. Or anyplace around here. They have nothing to offer and your sure to be robbed by your drug addicts so they can support their drug habit. Can I state facts? YES I can. Go sit in the park and watch the drunks sleeping it off. While your there you can also watch the drug deals happening in the gazebo. Oh and if the gazebo is full then the drug deals will happen over by the porta potty. How good can a town be that dosnt celebrate Independance day?? Want to buy drugs. Hey just around the corner from the holiday gas station, across the street from the nursery/greenhouse. Its a rental, white one story house. That house has been busted many many times for drugs. The landlord must be ignorant because he just moves more drug dealers in. You dont have to go there though. There are 3 trlr in the A row of the trlr park that are known drug houses. There are 2 in the very first section of the D row. Then there is one trlr that gets raided often in G row. First trlr. Oh and lets not forget the newest tennat in the E row. I personally told the mngr that she was dealing drugs out of there because a kid told me about his experience. The manager knowing she is dealing drugs told me that the gal is a convicted felon so she wouldnt be staying. She is staying and still dealing. Goes to show the quality of the management. Makes me wonder about the quality of the owner of the place. Yea this is a great town for the drug dealers and the drug addicts. The one and only good thing I can say about this town is the flea market is a great attraction. You dont have to live here to go to it though.

Move out of the "redneck/white trash trlr" park and most of your problems will go away.
