Bay St Louis Area Inquiry (Gulfport, Pearl: houses, safe area, to live)

Can someone tell me what the area is like around B Ave and Indian St? I see from mapquest that it appears to be pretty wooded. Based on the layouts of the street, it could be residential.

Does anyone know if it's rural or residential? Does the area flood easily? Is it a safe area to live? And does anyone know the average going rate for lots in Bay St Louis?

During Hurricane Katrina, I believe all of BSL flooded. I visited in 2007 and it looked like everything for about one mile from the water was gone. I'm sure it has recovered some, but it looked bad. You really need to visit.

Thank you, McCarly. The location is just under 3 miles from the coast. I just found out the area is called Shoreline Park, but the mailing address..I guess...is Bay St. Lous. Land elevation is 625' above sea level. That's pretty good.

I just need to find out if the area is safe crime-wise, and if anyone knows the going rates for lots.

Better re-check the elevation on Shoreline Park. I'm sure it is 3' above sea level.

There are houses going up in this area. Generally they are on stilts and look very nice.

Thank you, Busta, for that elevation correction. What a huge difference! I got my information from City Data, (http://www.city-data.com/city/Shorel...ssissippi.html). I let them know to check their informaiton. I thought it was odd, but I thought maybe it was off the coast far enough that it could be possible. I don't know much about the terrain there.

And Brickpatio, thank you, too! I saw from a few of the map sites that housing in that area was sparse. From the aerial views, you can't tell what the houses are like. There appears to be more wooded area than not.

Any other information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a bunch!

LOL, I had to check it myself. I pass through Bay St. Louis a few times a year and I know that some parts of the area have some elevation.

Like the old town area along the bay, but I don't remember any areas being 625' above sea level.

I would think that you would have to get well north of I-10 to find that type of elevations.

That area called Shoreline Park looks wooded not only because it is wooded, but also because most of the homes there were swept away by Katrina. The elevation is very low because of proximity to the bay. The newer homes going up are much bigger and nicer than the older ones and are all on stilts.

The part of Bay St. Louis immediately inland from downtown Bay St. Louis south of Hwy 90, was not swept away in Katrina, once you get a few buildings away from the water. Those houses are still standing and have an artsy feel to them, e.g. small Victorian houses with front porches and painted in pastels, with french doors and other influences.

If you want a little elevation, the Diamondhead golf community, just north of I-10 on the top end of the bay, is the beginning of slightly higher elevation north of the coastline. Those houses were damaged by the winds etc, but now the community looks the same as it did before Katrina.

If you want real elevation and some pretty countryside, you should check out Hwy 53 that runs northwest from Gulfport to Poplarville. As Hwy 53 exits Harrison County and cuts through northeast corner of Hancock County and then up into Pearl River County towards Poplarville, there is a noticeable elevation change, with some beautiful, lush green rolling ranch land in Hancock County. As you get closer to Poplarville it transitions to rolling pine forests, a very nice location if you want a house on some pretty acreage.
