Im moving to Hattiesburg, MS and Im hoping that someone can point me in a good direction. Im 23 and my hobbies include hunting, sports, and outdoors. I would like to be close enough to the city for shopping but live in a rural area. Oh and hopefully be in an area with little to no crime. Im willing to pay a little extra for a better area to live in. Any advise?

possibly somewhere off of lincoln road, but it's still going to be small yards and close together housing. you have to realize, hattiesburg consists of a 6 mile strip of road, well....3 of them. city limits out west to campus is what i'm speaking of. hattiesburg is really centered around the USM campus but is beginning to really push west away from downtown.

rural is relative i guess, as i think the majority of this town is that way with exceptions to oak grove and the avenues.

how much land are you wanting, and how far of a drive to get things like new clothes, dinner, or a movie night? ~15 miles....columbia and sumrall may be options, anything less you will be fairly close to town and a bit cramped in space unless areas like shadow ridge and canebrake are affordable for you, ~300k housing though canebrake has fallen off really hard lately.

possibly west 4th street around jackson road or similar would be sufficient. you would have a short ride to the longleaf trace bike route, and somewhat larger lots.

A little more info would help. Do you want an apartment, house, townhouse----do you want land around you or is rural with development near you ok?
Where are you coming from? To most people I would think H'burg is basically rural--that is it isn't an urban area like Birmingham or Memphis. Living in town does not have an urban feel. Or do you mean countryside---farms, fields ??

Hi,thanks for the response. I currently live in Kansas and while I live in a small town I would love to live a little further to everything (country side). A small house with a yard would be awesome. I can handle a 20-30 min drive to town and work.

If you would consider a house-share in McComb, please write me privately. I have a friend there who might be able to assist....

The neighborhood in Hattiesburg between Hardy, Hwy 49, Interstate 59, and Hwy 11 would be worth a look. Affordable pleasant homes within easy distance to downtown, shopping, and Shelby. It is quiet but not countryside--but the area of Richburg Hill and Pinehills Drive of off S. 28th Ave. fits that bill. I agree about Petal meeting your goals if the commute is ok.
