I believe this idea that Mississippians don't like "outsiders" is an exaggeration. If it were true, why do we have people moving here from "up Nawth" and other countries? For example, a lot of our motels and convenience stores are owned by Indian immigrants.

God bless,

CKB

I cant agree Chris. I really don't like visitors from outside the south. They tend to be ill-mannered and have an incredibly misplaced sense of superiority based on stereotypes of this area that they seem to be the only ones perpetuating.

This made me smile and I believe it to be true of a good deal of Southerners, not just Mississippians. I've been to Mississippi many a time. Everyone has always been wonderfully welcoming and hospitable, however, I imagine that may have something to do with my thick accent. Most Mississippians I've encountered probably think I'm a native. The ones that know I'm from out of town, still know I'm a deep-rooted Southerner.

As much as I'd like to retire in my home state of North Carolina, I am just sick of the constant yankee influx. Too many of them just have no respect for our culture, customs, and traditions. Then, they go and complain because they don't get to run in our social circles. I realize there are good ones that honestly want to come down and assimilate, but the majority of the transplants give those folks a bad name. Our culture us dying a slow death, especially here in NC. It's makes me sad. Oh well, that's my rant. Y'all may have your own problems down in Mississippi, but be happy that the never ending droves of transplants is not one of them.

I guess Mississippi doesn't have as many immigrants because our economy is like the Delta - flat.
One of our more (in)famous immigrants is Canadian-born Bernie Ebbers, who built up the WorldCom empire, only to have it crash.

My attempt at a solution is that I have been reading every thing I can get my hands on to learn about the history and culture. I will admit that I was invited in to a book club and have lasted with it for the entire time I have been here in MS.(and they with me, must be fair) Just felt a bit sad that the local neighbors were not welcoming. But staffs at the shops in Gulfport and Ocean Springs, Bay St.Louis etc have been lovely.

TO D of J

I noticed you are from Metairie. I must add that when I lived in Slidell people there would tell me they hadn't been to NO or Metairie in over 25 years. I was shocked. For me going to Metairie was a nerve calmer downer (is that a real phrase?) I went to college at Tulane and then would drive on over to Lakeside news in Metairie and some really great shops in Old Metairie. People thought I was wierd that my nerves actually calmed down going over to your side of the lake. Guess it's the city girl in me. Do you get what I mean? I still try to get over there as often as possible. To me there is a HUGE difference in the people from Metairie, etc than that North Shore.

Actually, I'm from Michigan by way of Santa Cruz and later Jackson, Miss. Metairie is cheap for me; I work in NOLa.

I'm adjuncting right now, trying to get my book published and looking for more permanent employment. I don't have much money nor time to shop.

I know a few folks who live in Covington--that mecca of bourgeois sensibility and white flight. I can't say much about it other than the ones I do know who live there wish they lived in the city again.

People in Mississippi are generally uneducated and close-minded individuals that can't understand another persons perspective.
See what I did there?

I don't think Louisianans are any different than Mississippians, except their food may taste better.

What did you do "there"?
