Welcome to the South.

Snakes and spiders shouldn't be a problem. Fire ants can be controlled with a teaspoon of Amdro when you find a mound. As far as tornadoes they happen but not that big of a problem. Hurricanes on the other hand it's good to have a plan ahead of time and not wait till the last min.

If the hurricane's heading northeast you want to head west and if it's heading northwest you want to head east. And remember to also take your pets with you. Most hotels are pet friendly when running from a hurricane.

Now the good stuff. Lots to do in and around Bay St. Louis. Swimming, fishing, crabbing and boating etc.

If you like the beach you can take a short boat ride to Ship Island

And a lot of good restaurants in the area.

The Blow-Fly Inn has an awesome stuffed flounder that will feed two adults.

Or if you like real bbq you have to go to The Shed.

The Shed Barbeque & Blues Joint | A Family Food Drinkery

The Fire Dog Saloon had a great burger but Katrina destroyed it. You can scroll down the page and see before and after pics.

And you will close for a day trip to New Orleans to visit the zoo, parks, aquarium etc., or head east for a great vacation at Gulf Shores. Both can be driven in less then two hours from Bay St. Louis.

Anyway, hope you guys make the move as I'm sure you will make lots of friends in the area.

Thank You for all the great info, Busta! I hope we end up down there, too, because it sounds wonderful...and yummy!
We'll see you all Jan 7th-19th and hopefully be moving shortly thereafter!

I've been looking at many pictures of Bay St. Louis and it looks so beautiful, but I can't tell...are there any palm trees there?

I don't know if there are any left after Katrina, but they certainly grow there. We had lots in Ocean Springs.

Just 2 more days and we leave for Mississippi! Won't actually arrive until Friday, it's a 20 hr drive so we will stop around Nashville Thursday night. I have a list of things I want to do!

~New Orleans, Cafe Du Monde for beignets, Lafayette and Metairie Cemeteries, see the Mississippi River, Friday Lunch?, French Quarter, Audubon Zoo
~Lots of walks on the beach
~Eat red beans and rice with Andouille sausage...YUM!

Not sure if we'll get to Gulfport but the Flounder sounds wonderful at the Blue Fly!

Depends how much free time we have, but I'm sure I'll find lots of new things to discover! If any of you are in the Bay St. Louis area, please visit Calvary Baptist Church on Longfellow, my husband will be preaching services Jan 9th, 12th, 16th (possibly the 18th). I can't wait to meet all the people down there!

Well we have been down here since the 7th and I must say I am loving it! The gulf is beautiful, but too cold for walks. So far we haven't tried any cajun/creole restaurants, when we do I will comment. The Cajun Country Store in Eden Isle was fun. We went into Old Town Bay St. Louis and what a beautiful place that is! Pass Christian is gorgeous, too, and I love all those boats in the harbor! Everyone here is very friendly. It has been cold here though, I think we brought a bit of winter with us from Michigan, I apologize! We will go to NOLA sometime this week, can't wait to try beignets, but I am deathly afraid of that bridge! The bridge to Pass Christian was not fun, either! I have a horrible fear of water and heights, needless to say we will NOT be crossing that bridge over Lake Ponchartrain, NO WAY! Overall, we are loving our time here, and would love to make it our home, Lord willing.

The BSL bridge and the Biloxi/Oceansprings bridges are the finest walking trails ever. Walk them about dark in the summer.

Ok. Went to NOLA, definitely NOT for me. Didn't like it at all. Got beignets at Cafe du Monde...YUM!!!! Took lots of pics of French Quarter (which was not quite what I expected) and Katrina damage. So I can check that off my list, but probably will never go back. Still cold here, but I am loving Mississippi!!!!
