LOL, the MS forums need to liven up a bit, so talk away I find it facinating to hear and learn about other places. Alas, it's back to work for me here though, will check in a bit later.

Ya, I'm on holidays myself right now. Just doing some stuff around the house, not going anywhere. My wife is working this week so I've been building the baby's room and whatnot. Enjoying the summer...

I've been to the coast 4 times and once to Georgetown Ky in the past three months, so I am way behind on work and am playing catch up here. I work for the water system, and run it out of my home and year end was the end of June and I had to have all my reports finished and mailed by the end of July, boy did I cut it close.

KingsX--Here in south Mississippi we don't have basements, by the way. I don't know about Tupelo. The roaches are kept at bay by a good defense of baits and spray and cleanliness. Usually it is only a single beast appearing not a colony if you are careful. If you let your guard down it can become a horde.
Two stories--We were in Austin, TX for a while and while looking at an apartment to rent the students had all just moved out for the semester break and the management had sprayed. Many of the doors were wide-open and the units empty. It was a sight to behold. Layers of roaches on the floors, the tables, the counters and crawling out of every vent and crevice. We didn't rent there. Also, in New Orleans one time a motel had a sign to please not leave any kind of crumb because it would attract roaches. I was sitting on the bed talking on the phone and eating a cracker. A tiny, tiny speck fell on the bed cover. As I was talking I could see one crawling under the door, crossing the room, and as I watched mesmerized, it came up the bed cover to the speck. Astonishing!
I am always surprised when I visit my family in Pa to see them leaving crusty bread or a piece of cake out on the counter uncovered. Don't do that here!

Yikes. I think if I was sitting on my motel bed and I saw a roach come under the door I'd have to instantly stomp it. I don't think I could deal with it coming up onto the bed.
I guess you don't need basements because the ground doesn't freeze. I've traveled a lot in the states and I've noticed that basements are big where I've gone. Even in North Dakota and South Dakota, you still don't see them as often as here. We don't necessarily have to have them either. I like them because it is extra space and cool place to go in summer. I don't even want to think what kind of bug would get into a basement in south mississippi!
We can leave stuff out too. At worst it'll just get moldy. Or the cat will eat it. We can have ants come in, but they are easy to deal with here. And it's pretty rare. I've heard of people having trouble with mice when it starts to get cold because they are looking for a warm place, but that is mostly in the country. And all you have to do is have one cat and they won't come in. They must be able to smell a cat or something.
What are the bugs and roaches like in winter in south miss.? I know they say in the north they aren't bad at all, but it is colder there.

Oh that reminds me, one time a friend and I went through Tremonton Utah, and they had some sort of bug infestation. At least that's what I'd call it. I don't know what kind of bug they were, but they were like a moth/fly with white wings that looked a little like flower pedals. From what I can remember anyway. They were spraying insecticide like it was going out of style. The McDonalds across from our hotel barely could keep them away from the food. We came in when there was a fair going on and we were going to go, but the bugs were way to bad for us. They were all over the road and whatnot. As it was, it was one of the better hotels we stayed in that trip. The bugs didn't bother us in the room, and the air conditioner actually worked, unlike many other hotels we stayed in when the hot August desert temperature reached 40 degrees!

In winter there are very little buggy problems. Fleas can surface if the weather warms. As I said before dogs need year round heartworm and flea treatment. Otherwise, I don't see anything. But this rquires that you don't allow a buildup inside the house, of course. Nail them good before that happens.

In addition to West Nile bearing mosquitos, the fire ants are terrible. Just when you think you've driven them from your yard (to your neighbor's!) a new mound pops up! Lately, my neighborhood has several new mounds that pose a danger to my toy poodle when we're out walking. Eeek!

I remember stopping at a rest stop south of Hattisburg (I think) and the restroom was literaly covered with roaches of all sizes. Like wall paper. MOVING wall paper. Now I wasn't (an still am not) easily spooked about bugs but believe me I held it all the way to Gulport!

The roaches really are nasty, but as far as health concerns be more concerned with your mosquito population. Warmer temperatures are allowing some really scary vector species to move inland from the coastal areas.
