I lived in NE Mississippi for a few years and I didn't see roaches as a big problem. They were manageable. The mosquitoes bothered me more. They are HUGE... biggest mosquitoes I have ever seen. Every single day in the summer I wore bug repellent. I called it my "summer perfume". Also, fleas can get wayyyy out of hand if you have carpet. I had a friend who rented an apartment and moved out within a week because of fleas - you could see them jumping everywhere! Scary.

Although these pests are bothersome, I have to say the northeast mississippi is a wonderful place and at times I wish I had never left. Don't let the stories put you off too much if you live there you learn to deal with it like everybody else and it just becomes part of your routine to spray for bugs, keep your pets protected, and know a brown recluse spider when you see one!

No. We do have some big red wasps that will get your attention, though.

Recently Madison County had the first case of West Nile virus reported. There were some last year, but this is the first for '08. That's the really scarey insect! Sort of makes sitting outside in the cool of the evening a hazardous prospect.

[quote=KingsX;1125056]That's great info aiangel. I think mosquitoes exist pretty much everywhere on the planet. They are apparently horrible in the far north arctic for some reason. Someone told me its because when in the summer the snow melts, and leaves little pools of water everywhere. And since the ground never thaws, they just sit there and fester and make a wonderful breeding ground for the little guys.[quote]

I've heard the opposite about ponds, lakes, etc.

Apparently THE FISH eat down the mosquito birth rate and if you keep
your yard and house devoid of any little puddles---having a pond or
lake greatly heats with controlling mosquitoes.

I know one lady in Clinton who said she used to have a bad mosquito
problem (had to spray the yard every summer--TWICE), but after her
hubby put in a pond and stocked it with fish, they never had anymore
problems.
