Default Tornado destruction in Mississippi.

Something around 25-30 people have been killed in the recent storms in Mississippi. Is anybody alright? It looks to me that Monroe/Chickasaw/Webster counties got it pretty bad. Particularly towns like Eupora, Smithville and Philadelphia.

Thoughts and prayers from out here.

32 in Mississippi, but as bad as we had it Alabama had it worse with 184. My wife was in Birmingham for a meeting during the storm.

We lost a friend in Smithville.

Another friend near Oxford has three trees on her house, and numerous others down.

Our friend in Fulton has an insurance agency in Fulton and has been on the phone all day with people crying, scared, in shock, confused........at 7PM Thursday there are still people from Smithville who are missing.

Monday and Tuesday nights were the worst. Wife woke me up when the sirens started Monday night. I went outside with the dogs and it was eerie. No movement, no sound except for the sirens. Pitch black. Dogs stayed close and were glad to be in. All the porch lights were on (Indicates "we know") except one, so I called. Porch light came on.

Wind began to pick up and just kept rising and rising. Peaked out here at about 65 MPH.

Oh wow. I'm sorry about your friends, where did your event take place?

I am really sorry to hear about all the tragedies, but why can't people just move. These areas are nothing but disaster areas year round.

I suspect you are pretty young Hans. People live near work or family. Moving requires new employment, uprooting in many cases from one's support network, cultural adjustment, and the ability to handle the logistics financially, physically, and emotionally. Then there is the idea that moving to avoid a tornado becomes akin to trying to live in a padded room. When is it safe enough? Ca. has its fires, earthquakes, and mud slides. The Northeast has its floods and blizzards and icy conditions that precipitate falls and car accidents.

Of course, if one is in a flood zone or someplace isolated and defined, it might be easier to make a move out if finances aren't a consideration. But moving away from general disasters that cover much of the country isn't so easy.

I have lived in MS nearly 40 years and have taken cover three times with thank God no actual damage done. Where would I statistically be totally safe?? Does this warrant facing all of the complications and the ordeal of a major move? Maybe I shouldn't fly, drive on highways, or take a shower in a slippery tub?

Your question is a natural one--but not an easy answer.
