I want to visit when the trees are at the peak of their fall colors; would that be now, or should I wait a few more weeks?

I would wait a few weeks. Everything is still pretty green here in Central MS.

Depends on what part of the Trace... peak colors on the northern sections will be weeks off from peak colors near Natchez.

Here's what TWC says:
Alabama Fall Foliage - Maps, Colors and Photos - weather.com

Technically that's focused on Alabama, but Mississippi will be similar.

This link reports on fall foliage along the Trace. Tupelo peaks around October 29 and Jackson about two weeks later.

We just drove a couple hundred miles on the Trace two days ago and saw little or no "color" - other than shades of green - displayed at this time. The prior posts have it right when they advise you to wait a bit longer to see the changes in color.
