I moved to Byhalia from Michigan a year ago. Most of the people are really nice. There are some ( just like any where you go) that people are not so nice. Just be your self and I'm sure you will be accepted.

I saw on another forum the state might usually be pronounced "Miss-SIPP-ee," mentioned by a relocated Yankee who'd been living in Gulfport for the past 3-5 years.
Why is Jackson considered weird or different? I heard on another forum that Jacksonians throw some of the best parties. I've never been to MS, but I think I'd like to come for a visit sometime.

I believe they have a crime problem with marauding gangs in Jackson and that's just the way it is. They've even been known to break in motel rooms and rob people/guests visiting Jackson.

I see, scary!... So I guess I'll just have to stay elsewhere, but maybe I might visit Jackson on a day trip.

Jackson's not a redneck place at all.
It's basically a carbon copy of Atlanta, just smaller. Gangs, (black on white) racism, violence (especially after the Katrina evacs coming up there)...you just don't want any part of it. It's gotten worse since I left Mississippi.
I would just stay in North Mississippi, like Corinth, etc etc...Central and South Mississippi are just not places to raise a family. Trust me, I've lived there. You should be fine if you stay up there, though.

Hi. If you have lots of friends where you are, you will find plenty of friends in Corinth. I was born and raised there, and my Mom and sisters are still there. My dad was from Pennsylvania, and was a "yankee" until his accent faded .
It's not personal, and probably means not what you think. It's something that is said around the grill when you and your friends are having a beer and joking around - not something said in anger.
Please consider that Mississippi has come a LONG way in the past 30 years. Corinth, in particular, has had discussions on race that leave most of the country behind. The churches started a program there where blacks and whites visited each others churches. It opened eyes on both sides, and has led to a more harmonious racial environment in the area.
Please be aware, also, that you won't be the only one in Corinth from somewhere else. Much of the population now has moved there for work or retirement. You'll find plenty of good ole boys, but a good cross section of America.
Just remember that when in Corinth, you are the one with the funny accent - not them . Good luck..............

Jesus, Ya'll make Jackson sound like Compton. My mom is from Jackson and I still go back there to visit occassionally and it is just not that bad. I have lived in MS my whole life but have never spent a great deal of time in the Northern part of the state. Down here we are very conservative and Christian. If you go to church and are not a PETA member you will be accepted just fine.

My step dad is a full fledged Yankee and lives in my hometown of Collins which is about 2500 people and located an hour south of Jackson. He gets along just fine. I'm sure he gets ribbed a little about being a yankee, but its all in good fun.
Let me ask you this. How would a Mississipian with a southern accent fit in up north? A lot of people would have a preconceived notion of how someone from the south is without even knowing them. I know this from being a transplant to the big city in Dallas. Even though its in the south I found I got a lot of unwanted heckling for being a "redneck" simply for having a southern drawl.
So as for people in the south being backwards and unaccepting, thats a load of crap. People everywhere are like that. But not all of them. You'll find some good people in Mississippi who will welcome a yankee just fine. Don't be offended by the handful that my look at you funny. They aren't important anyway. I figured that out for myself here in Dallas that the ones who were rude or looked down on me from being a small town MS boy really weren't worth wasting a second thinking of them.

I am origiinally from Wisconsin and I was called a yankee, and still am, even after 16 years. I never understood it because I thought yankee would be New Engladn area, especially NY because of the Yankees but I was wrong. I still struggle with southern terminology like "y'all", and still say "you guys" and such. I have picked up "coke" for any flavored "soda"
It took some getting used to the food, but it's good. I still hate grits!!! As far as culture, people are friendlier, but the division among race, still tends to exist down here.
Just my input.
