Speaking as a native of Corinth, I would like to say we are very happy to have people visit our area and. if they so choose, relocate. "Yankee" is all in good fun. And we have LOTS of people that move here from areas outside the region all the time.
I will tell you that what most locals find offensive is for anyone to move here and try to "change" things. Don't talk bad about us (i.e. the South) or generalize what you think we are about and then want to be friends. Please appreciate our customs and ways of doing things. Don't badmouth us for not doing things the way you have always done them wherever you were before.
One southern saying: "A whistlin' woman and a crowin' him never come to a good end." ~ Meaning don't go puttin' on airs. Blend right in and you'll fit right in.

Yes yes I agree. I mentioned in the Tennessee forum on one of what seems like the weekly "will a yankee be welcomed in the south" or "will a ___ (fill in blank with liberal, or minority) be accepted in the south" and I am really getting tired of those waste of bandwidth questions.
The only thing I can explain is that people get there total perception and view of the south by watching "The Dukes of Hazard" reruns.
Now I think I am going to post in every north-eastern forum "Will a Rebel be accepted in the north" and see how they like it.

I am from southwest mississippi, unfortunately live in missouri now. Have not been accepted because of my accent. It is assumed by most that I am uneducated, backwards. As far as I can see, most people here are clannish; meaning that your parents, grandparents had to be born and raised here or you aren't accepted.
I call them frozen MAs .M is for missouri, you figure out the A. Frozen because they are so cool, bet the women are cool too. They muust be cool as the women think southern belles can't keep their panties on. We must be "hot".
Hopefully we'll be moving SOUTH soon and the MAs can have it.
Move north at your own risk and lotsa luck.

Funny hearing a Mississippian complain about people in another state being clannish, because that is EXACTLY what I have experienced in Mississippi!!

I am talking about being judged (and not being good enough) as soon as you open your mouth. Strange considering it's mostly the locals that are named in the paper under the sheriffs report. But us "outsiders" are shunned.
Maybe we'll both get what we want; u-hauls may meet on I-55. I would imagine this attitude is in all areas of many states,to one degree or another. No-one should have to live their life for years where they hate. Keep in mind that I have met a few people with some sense, but very few. Just to be around people that talk like me would make me delirously happy.

Probably so, especially in the smaller towns. Good luck to you in moving back to where you feel at home

I live in New England and it looks like I will be going to Jackson on business for a length of time. While I am not a PETA member, I certainly am not Christian. Is the religion of others that big of a deal in Mississippi? How do people even know if you go to church?
Here in New England we don't talk about religion (or anyones lack thereof) too much. There are many religions represented, and we all keep it to ourselves. Your business is your business.

You also have to give out a rebel yell one or twice a day. If you can't do the rebel yell than an occasional "YEHAA" will suffice and then you will be accepted in the south.
...by the way if no one has noticed I've given up trying to give serious answers to these types of questions.

It's entirely possible to not be Christian (or religious at all) in Mississippi, although it's harder than in many places. I'm an atheist and I've survived just fine. People will probably assume you're Christian or if it comes up at all, they might invite you to their church. If anyone asks you, just say that you're a Jew/Muslim/whatever you are, or that you're not religious. If they press the issue, remind them that's just how you believe, and that's how it is. Anyone who argues or verbally attacks you for your beliefs is not someone you want to associate yourself with. Older people will be the most conservative on the religion issue (40+) but younger people tend to be a bit more accepting.
