LOL! It annoys me so much every time I see a thread on this forum by some non-Mississippian asking "Why do Southerners get mad at me when I talk bad about them?" Its like they think it's their RIGHT to be able to talk to us like we're dogs, and we have no right to talk back. I say non-Mississippians because this isn't just a 'Yankee thing', there was a thread here recently from a Scots woman who was amazed that people thought she was rude when she asked things like, "How come you people are so POOR? Why don't you have any CULTURE like we do in Scotland? Why are you all so IGNORANT?" Gee, I can't imagine why people think you're rude, lady.

LOL in appreciation of the point. Backing up a bit, although I am not a native Mississippian, my excuse for commenting on this thread is that I consider it my "ancestral home" (most of my ancestors migrated from MS to TX after the War) and have a lot of good friends and distant kin in the Magnolia State. If I ever had to leave Texas, Mississippi is probably where I would go!
But anyway, I couldn't help chuckling a bit over the great advise about "don't start telling them how you did it up North"! We in Texas will give a similar "word to the wise!"

My sister and her family live in Brandon (very near Madison) and they love it! We visit there often and like it very much - lots to do and see, IMO. They live out near the reservoir so you might consider looking in that area. Many of the homes are quite expensive but if you look, you can find something affordable and it is a buyer's market right now.
Madison is absolutely beautiful and has been rated one of the top small towns to live in. They mayor there has done a fantastic job of keeping out crime, upgrading almost everything and it just has a wonderful "feel" of home. We would love to move to Madison!
Best of luck!!

I agree. When we first moved to California many years ago, (we're back in MS now), I got comments like "Do you have running water where you live?", and "You talk funny", and "I heard that it's okay for you guys to marry your first cousins down there." Things like that. It gets a bit old to always be listed as racist as well. I have met many racists and bigots in my life and having lived all over the country, I can say with certainty that the majority of them were not from Mississippi!

That is to your credit for sure, Colts..and I wouldn't doubt -- in fact, know for certain -- it is true of most northerners. But you know the old adage: A couple of rotten apples will mess up the whole barrell.
Elaborating a bit, there have had similar exchanges with folks from California and/or northerners on the Texas thread who ask on similar themes (how welcoming, what to know, etc) and one bit of advise that is almost certain to come up is to NOT start telling us how you did it "Up North" or on the west coast. We don't care and resent it. And that what might be considered admirable frankness in those locales might be taken, rightfully, as tacky rudeness down here. Further, those who take that advise will find it a very pleasant and welcoming place to live. Those who dont? Wellllll....just keep in mind another old adage: A Southerner will be polite until they are mad enough to kill you!
But seriously, I really do think the biggest gaffe many "transplanted yankees" make when they move south is to forget the simple axiom, with a Dixie twist I just made up: "When in Rome, do as the Romans do. If you can't...then at least don't tell them their dance steps are wrong!"

Mississippians can be their own worst enemy, paranoid, critical, and suspicious. Unhospitality is more like it. They say they welcome outsiders, but hey really don't, it only because they truly feel ashamed of their history, don't even understand it really. But I think the more people move here from other places in the U.S the better. It will mean the difference between fantasy and reality. Now you know that's really how it is. But come on we welcome diversity, I know I do.

Tip: Don't act like a yankee smartelic and you'll be fine. Make jokes about us or make fun of the way we talk and you're going to get a rude reaction. I could say the same thing about how people treated me when I moved to the North with a thick Southern accent--problem was, I didn't do anything to them, I was more than nice. Some people are just jerks, simple as that. Don't be one and you'll be alright.

That's funny, because I'm not ashamed of my state nor it's history. Why should I be? It's home. I understand what happened here. Lots of bad things have happened in lots of states--hell, our whole country was founded through the process of treating the Native Americans like dirt, but I don't see a lot of people being ashamed of America because of that. Bad things happen.
If some of us don't like yankees, that's our business. There are a lot of Northerners who don't like us and who have never met us before.
