Who considers Vermont and New Hampshire 'East Coast'? Not me. Not anyone I know.
The Mississippians who think (and there are more of them than you might imagine) consider New England to be the other place (besides the South) where you can still find a majority of Old Stock Americans.
As you can tell by my last name, I am not of "pure" Old Stock.
Mississippi has some people of Italian, Lebanese, and Jewish ancestry who have been here a long time. Check out the Mississippi Delta and you will find people with surnames like Fratesi, Malouf, and Kossman. There's also a Vietnamese community centered in Biloxi, and some immigration from Mexico (mostly agricultural laborers and poultry processors) and India (most motels are owned by Indians). German Americans settled in Gluckstadt (just north of Grandview Gloria's former place of residence) and Seneca, just north of Lumberton (check out the cemetery across the road from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church). Even some Finnish Americans gave Mississippi a try (there's a Finnish Lutheran Church south of Highway 90 just east of Pascagoula). Of course, there are the Choctaws with their casinos in east-central Mississippi.
No, Mississippi isn't as "diverse" as many other states (whatever "diversity" means), but we are not homogenous either.
Why the (cuss word) would you want to encourage others to move to Mississippi? You may not have noticed, but 'the rest of America' is turning into a third world hellhole at a dizzying speed. Mississippi has its own problems, and does not need New York's problems, Miami's problems, or LA's problems in addition to its own.
Charlotte North Carolina, only a decade back, was paradise. Then there was an influx of New Yorkish outsiders, and it's quickly turning nasty there. People are fleeing to the outskirts and the exurbs there. Minneapolis is not what it used to be, either...nor is Des Moines (thanks to Governor VileSack, who deliberately imported inner city criminals from the East Coast (selling out his constituency got him a cushy new job, though).
Do you really want welfare queens from eastern cities moving down there for the cheap rent? (hopefully, the stingy welfare and poor 'services' will keep them away) Do you really want pushy New York guttersnipes taking over business in Mississippi?
Do you want what happened to Lewiston, Maine, to happen to Tupelo? Of maybe you'd like what happened to Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania to happen to Laurel? And heaven forbid you should even THINK about what happened to Maywood, California (and is happening to towns across that once-heavenly state).
Mississippi does not have much going for it. The one thing that it DOES have is a relative lack of the kind of people who have ruined huge swaths of America. The state's other 'problems' help keep evil, hyper-competitive, Upper East Coast people from coming in, and also reduce the number of Third World people.
Since 2008, 'Change' has come to mean only bad things in America. Encourage 'people' to move to Mississippi, and I can guarantee you won't be getting Ozzie & Harriet or the Huxtables. In fact, what you'll be getting will make even the

Jenny, the mindset you find so revolting is shared by the entire U.S! No one wants the stereotypical upper east coast people in their state. If you think Barney Frank is dangerously out of control and Chuck Schumer is the worst thing that ever happened to civilized America, then you'll fit right in. Come on down!

Well, I do hope so. It seems like a lovely place to visit. But, you see, I lived the first 40 years of my life on Long island and NYC, so that may offend people who form their opinion of all New Yorkers based upon the media. I've lived 20 years in Vermont and New Hampshire, without a problem "fitting in".
Stereotyping is wrong, and works in both directions, North and South, East and West. Judge the person, not their origin. You may be pleasantly surprised!
Thank you! Upstate NY is different from NYC, let alone the stereotypes. Eventhough my dad's family left Tchula in 1965 for Syracuse, he still wants to visit the area. I don't know about living there though.
My husband and I are young professionals, and we are moving to MS this summer for jobs for the both of us, and also for my husband to pursue his PhD. My husband was also offered full tuition-remission, which is a big draw for us. We're pretty excited about him graduating debt-free with his PhD. We have spent most all of our lives living in Michigan, so we realize there is a lot of stuff that will be different. But we are laid back, flexible people, and realize that life is a culmination of different experiences. We are excited to spend at least 4 years of our lives in MS! Who knows, we might like it there. If not, we always have other possibilities. Either way, we are both excited to meet new people, experience new ways of life, and to pursue further education. I firmly believe life is what you make of it, and a positive attitude/outlook towards life's circumstances have a lot to do with whether someone is happy about their life or not.
You want people to move to Mississippi you need to show them, they have options. Obviously from the posts you can see people are living in a backwards mindset about MI. Like take Texas, they have Metal, ficiton conventions, and BBQ 24/7 hours a day. Plus it is dry, and the western, historical atmosphere of it. Or CA for example, they try to make it look like Florida.
If I was a college student, and I wanted to go to MI, I would want that "Undergrad" exprience of my life. Like all of those things you wanted to do in college.
Need to win some Super Bowls, and baseball games, and even Olympic golds. MI can be the
Sports capital of the world for a short while, Go to Mississippi to become the best sports person, Even boxing, and martial arts.
What prevents people from moving the most are family members. Family members are stuck to the rock they sit on.
What I heard about Mississipi is about their constant rain. I love the rain, and the plain sky it brings. However people either wants the four seasons, or summer time, everytime. You will need to research what made Mississipi on the map to begin with and then intergrate other state popularities, into it.
Like Detroit for a time was Motor City, Rock City, etc but now they are barren, and looking to go green city.
Here are some other fun, risky ideas.
Lower the age of consent. This will cause controversy because of the rules in various religious texts. Gain some attention, of course nobody would care at all, but it will make heads turn.
Make the plants that X drugs spawn from legal but the usage still illeagal,
and double the penalty of the law, so that nobody will want to use it, but have
a state reasonability. Then plant the stuff all over the place to make it worthless.
Be the first state to make Narcotics, and drugs worthless, and prove that people have the will
power to ignore it. That will attract some idiots, however. Idiots who will make babies and make the population grow.
Bann the teaching of pro-non-heterosexuality in schools.
Of course we unbann all books, of any sort and prevent people from pinning crimes on fictions, or imagery. People can no longer go to court and blame the bible, the internet, the devil, or some picture or icon, for their misdeeds.
Do not talk about sexual harrasment to students until the last year of their highschool year.
Trust me back, in the 1990's these kind of talks damaged people for life.
Make a law where people who have STD's and VD's must wear a special tattoo.
Give the option of attending school, or X education. That people will have to pass standardized tests, in order to progress, to college
Give Native Americans right to their share of land??? Repopulate Mississippi, with it's indigeous peoples. Build a videogame museum, with a functioning 70's 80's arcade?
Turn Mississippi into a futuristic Veinece with automated monorail lines ( that are non-Japanese, European, or Oriental ), and undersea walkways where you can see threw the glass. Then comes homeland security, of course. Yeah turn them into a futuristic place where they build robots, and summon all the programmers, and engineers and give them free housing.
In Oceania they were planning to build a city on the ocean, that was floating. But they canceled the project. It was around the New Zeland area. Make Mississippi into a progressive, non-failing Dubai???
Open a sealab, where scientist bring back creatures to life, like things that went extinct. Mississippi could be the next Jurrasic park. We can make fairy people, moon-men, meirmaids, and call the area Raccon City, and have a special task force called stars, because Mississippi would be aiming for the stars, Ad Astra Per Aspera. Then the clones from the island.
Mississippi the American wonderland, an untamed feat of naturalism, lumminism, and of course beauty. Mississippi.
And New Yorkers. You guys have quite a bad reputation up here and in many northeast states.
Sure, the weather may be nice, but we haven't heard of an economic boom in Mississippi since...well...never.
Yeah. If you're looking for an economic boom Mississippi is a poor choice, and if that's the primary reason for your existence, you'll do better in New York.
Your radical ideas won't fly down here. We have legalized casinos, and they are more trouble than they are worth, with all the social ills they have brought (bankruptcies, broken families, draining money from those already poor, etc.)
Slightly off topic, and a nit-picking complaint, but the acceptable abbreviation for Mississippi are MS, Miss, and sometimes Mi'sippi. "MI" is Michigan.

What constant rain? Are you thinking Washington State? There is more rain than, say, in TX or SoCal, but it's a long way from constant. It actually gets quite dry at times.
By lower the age of consent, do you mean allow teens younger than 16 (current age) to have willing sex with and/or get married to an adult? Let me guess... either you're under 16 and in love with an adult, or are over 16 and in love with a kid. Exactly what kind of people are you trying to bring into the state????
Marijuana is already decriminalized at the state level, however, many local jurisdictions have laws making it illegal locally. But that doesn't' matter because the Feds have declared cannabis to be illegal in all 50 states.
I think I understand the homosexuality bit... you want to make it illegal for a teacher to say it's bad in class? So... you want to restrict freedom of speech?
While I'm generally against the banning of books, there is no way you will ever convince me that any school library has the need for a Playboy subscription, a copy of the Kama Sutra, or a guide on how to build homemade bombs. I'm not saying that teens shouldn't be allowed these books, just that there's no business for them in a school library. As for non-school public libraries, the local jurisdiction should be allowed to decide which books they purchase using their money. I wouldn't call this a "ban".
I honestly can't think of a legitimate case in the last several decades where someone successfully blamed the bible, the devil, a picture, etc. for a crime and managed to get away with it (maybe as part of an insanity plea, but I don't think that's what you're talking about). What exactly ARE you talking about?
And there's where your post just goes into lala land. Mandatory tattoos, an arcade museum, monorails, and a floating city, all suggestions from the same person, all suggestions for ways to improve the state? How old are you and what type of books do you read?
As for Native Americans, I agree they were royally screwed a while back, and many tribes are still in bad shape. But before you start giving the Mississippi-based Native Americans any handouts you should go see the Silver Star Casino on the Choctaw Reservation near Philadelphia, MS. They're doing quite well all by themselves.
