???mississippi???
My husband and I are from California. We have traveled all over the world, love cultures and fitness. He is in the military and got stationed on the gulf coast.
Mississippi is a very beautiful place but I am having a lot of trouble finding things to do (other than casinos or Habitat for Humanity)and people to befriend.
I am very aware of the current events and demographics of the state. We are young, educated people trying to call the gulf coast home.
Any positive thoughts? Please help!

Not being a smart-aleck or anything, but unfortunately rebuilding has been a way of life -- not by choice -- for many of us these past two years. It doesn't leave much time for fun.
But that said, where are you at on the coast? If we know where you are maybe we can give some ideas of things that might interest you.

Only thing I can say is..
STAY OUT OF THE DELTA!
There is Plenty to do on the gulfcoast besides just Casinos and Habitat 4 Humanity. Fishing, Sailing, Swimming, Hiking, Gyms ( avoid World Gym ) Movies, heck explore what other cities near by have as well.. Beaches in Gulfshores just an hour away are nicer and the water is green. Just get out there and look around you'll see there is plenty to do on the mississippi gulfcoast.

As it happens, I have a thread on http://www.city-data.com/forum/missi...-south-ms.html
PM me sometime -- I'm a young, well-traveled female and I'd love to have new friends to go do stuff with!

One worth while activity would be to volunteer at the Humane Society in Gulfport. The animals down here sure need all the help they can get!

I am also on the gulf coast. Why don't you share some of your interests, and we can steer you in the right direction. There are lots of things to get involved in. There are local theatre groups. I know that Lynn Meadows Discovery Center looks for volunteers. Share some of your interests and I bet we can help you out.
Do you go to church anywhere?

I'd like to know the answer to this question myself. In fact, my very first post on here was looking to meet people and make friends. lol Because of economics here in the US, it requires both husband and wife working to get by. By the time, you get home from work, you have to cook supper, help your kids with homework, get them ready for bed, etc. and you don't have time to visit with friends. I can remember when growing up, neighbors got together and had coffee, etc. and visited, but this doesn't happen anymore. Man oh man, have things changed!

In short, the same things that usually accompany small towns - only more so because its even more isolated, poor, and unwilling to open itself to new ideas than even the average small town - even Southern ones.
I speak as someone who spent 30 years in the Delta off and on. I won't go back there for anything other than visiting family.
