MODERATOR: Folks, let's be sure our comments are restricted to Mississippi and the "flavor" of this great state. This is primarily a relocation forum for folks considering moving to Mississippi and we're starting to drift off into some discourses on societal ills and other areas. Back on track please!

I think you are taking some risk by moving to Mississippi. There are still people today that fly Confederate flags in Mississippi. Unfortunately, there is some people that suspect that the KKK is still around. The KKK started in either Alabama or Mississippi, and they could still be members of the KKK there today.

If you are talking about a town in the delta then I would say in all honesty that while no one would harass you, you might find it difficult making friends. Mississippi is a weird place in that things are very different depending on what part of the state you are in. The northwest corner, Jackson and the Coast are fairly progressive. Tupelo and Hattiesburg are in that group on a good day. The rest of the state is a crap shoot. The mentality of many people in the delta is still a few decades behind on BOTH sides of the racial divide.

It's been a few years since I moved away from Mississippi but my family remains so I'm back and forth a bit. After living in Hattiesburg, Starkville, near Memphis (Horn Lake), and growing up in a small town near Jackson, I'd say Muskrad's description is most accurate. People likely won't give you a hard time but making friends may be difficult, depending on whether you relocate to a rural community or a larger city.

First of all, the KKK was not started in either MS or AL. The KKK formed in TN in 1865. Do some research before you slander a state. Furthermore, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center and tolerance.org, the state with the most hate groups is California, with 80, followed by Texas with 67 (MS has 28).

Yes, there are still some people who fly the confederate flag. Some as a permanent tongue stuck out feature against political correctness, some out of racial hatred and bigotry, some out of a sort of old loyalty to great-grandparents. But there are more U.S. flags flying than confederate flags. I have seen many biracial couples who are well accepted in Jackson. Try a visit before making a move.

Did Miss Jenni make the move?
As it stands today, 5/27/08, she has made a lump sum total of two posts, the first on 9/21/2006, the second on 10/5/2006. I think it would behoove this forum to find out if she and her family did make the move, how they are getting along if they did, or if they didn't.

Sorry if I offended you, Misssippienne. People make fun of my state a lot(Nebraska), and I don't like how it feels, so I'm sorry. I think Misssissippi sounds like a great place to live, and I have considered moving to the Gulfport-Biloxi area. I know hate groups are everywhere. There is a Neo-Nazi group in my city, which I never knew about until now.

Then how the hell would you know about MS living in Nebraska? Your original response was irresponsible. Moderator cut: edit I know you are trying to apologize, but I just shake my head at these type of threads.
