Relocating to Southaven
Hello Everyone,
I'm new to this so please bear with me. I'm looking to relocate from Chicago to Southaven. How are the jobs? I would like to rent a home is that option available to me in that area? Due to the student loans I have, no one will finance me. What about Collierville? I hear that is a pretty nice area also. Can anyone help me with information on those areas and ones that are nearby?
Thanks,
Jada

Southaven
What type of work are you looking for? Collierville is a bit pricey. The benefit of living in Collierville is that there are no state taxes. North Mississippi (Southaven/Olive Branch) is also very nice and convenient to Memphis. Do you have children? North Mississippi schools are wonderful.

Relocating To North Mississippi
I am an office manager with background in escrow closings as well. I have an 18 year old who is in his last year of high school, but the schools here are so bad, moving there would be great. My husband is a cable technician and we are doing research to see which area in North Mississippi would benefit both of our careers. If you have any information to help guide us in the right direction, that would be great.

Hello, I was just in Southaven during the Thanksgiving holiday and it is official. My husband and I have found a residence in the Southaven area and we will be coming to live there permanently no later than January. I loved it. We also looked in Cordova, Olive Branch, Red Banks and Germantown. I loved Southaven hands down. The new homes they are buildling there are in a prime location. However, I have a question about how the tax system works there. I was told I would have to pay a hefty tax for my vehicles. Is that true?

Unfortunately, TRUE! Someone else can correct me if I am wrong but it is my experience your car tag expense is based on blue book value of your vehicle. You will be required to pay a one time assessment for what ever the tax would be on the amount your vehicle is worth. Subsequent tag costs will be much less. Hopes this helps.
BTW, Welcome to City-Data. Hope you stick around.

Okay, I'll brace myself for the taxes on my vehicles which totals three between me and my hubby. I have my vehicle, he has his plus his work vehichle. It's only one time, right? I will be sticking around City-Data in the Mississippi forum permanently. I really enjoy the feedback I receive and it has helped me tremendously. Kudos to the Mississippi Forum... Yaayyy!!

Jada - you will pay a larger tag fee the FIRST time, but it start dropping every year. For example, you may be assessed a $400.00 fee when you move here on one of your vehicles but the next year you may only pay $80 or $90. It depends on the type of vehicle and year model. The county tax assessor's office can provide you with the exact amount you will owe, if you contact them.
Glad you enjoy CD. Hope to hear from you a lot.

Hey Jada...
Prepare yourself sister!...i moved here from Chicago 6 years ago and still am getting used to the differences. I reside in Tishomingo County (which is a dry county) (alcohol-less... ) and being a Roman Catholic that enjoys wine...well...it's ridiculous to me. Prohibition was conquered long ago...I am happy that I have another Chicagoan in the midst here....enjoy the clean air! It is my favorite difference from the big city. Happy Holidays!!! Kristina

Good morning Jada...It depends on what profession you're in as to jobs down here. In my particular field (office clerical/administrative), there are 10-15 applicants trying for the same job as myself and it's a jungle out there! There are many positions open in the medical field, including medical coders.
Collierville is nice, but very expensive to live there, and the crime rate has been increasing rapidly. FedEx has 2 locations out there you might be interested in checking.
Good luck!

Here is a link to give you an idea of the cost of tags.
DeSoto County Mississippi Public Records Inquiry
Just go to Tax Collector & click on tag renewal
It will not give you the cost of the 5% tax you will pay on the value of your vehicle the first time. However, it will show about what the tag will cost.
Tags are not high for me because I do not have a $50K SUV. The older the vehicle the cheaper the tags are.
It always amazes me that folks do not mind paying $200 to $300K for a house but car tags that cost $400 is terrible
