Oh boy, this is getting a little heated. First of all, every since I began reading City Data about 2 years ago, I hear the reference to a troll every now and then. I get that it's a derogatory word but a little unsure of its exact meaning.

So if MS is a red state then I am glad. As you may know, we visited this summer for a few weeks to see if we would like to relocate to the area within the next year, year and a half. We enjoyed it. One of the reasons MS is a big contender is because it is a conservative, religious, "regular joe" kind of place. I happen to feel this is not a bad thing. Try living here in the north where liberal is the way to be, where being religious is old school, where marrying your own sex is great. I believe in tolerance but try teaching your children "old fashioned values" in this environment.

Thanks Obama for all the liberal views you have helped to bring into daily life. Oh, and thanks for lowering the social security by .02 cents per dollar instead of leaving it alone or raising it a cent. And how is this going to help me when I would like to retire? And the Obamacare? Oh, and the almost socialist entiteled feel you have brought about.

Well, maybe Romney isn't the best choice, but I am hoping he's a whole lot better that what we have now. I'm hoping he can turn American around instead of continuing to run it into the ground. So I'm going to go to the voting booth from here in my blue state and cast my vote for a red candidate. Yes, I will certainly lose my vote but to me it's also my right . I used to live in the south where my vote counted and it felt good.

Mississippi, with all your values, traditions and morals - you're not half bad. Stay red, it suits you!

Oh joy, I see this is getting all the newbie posters response, just like the frequent "Is racism still a problem in MS" posts that pop up now and then.

I've been on this forum for just a few days now and have been learning more than any newbie should have to about the short-comings of my adopted State. I hear a lot of things about how the schools suck, the Delta is rife with crime and no development and how Ms. is a great place to retire just as long as one avoids the State populace.

Now...call me crazy, but maybe....just maybe.... some folks in my newly adopted State are not all that wild about how things are where they grew up. For them I have some Class A information. Listen up, Folks..... you heard it here first.... A New President is NOT Gonna help your situation. If you want better schools and some Industry in your Delta, folks in Ms. are gonna have to stop arguing for their own limitations and start making it happen. Its gonna take some well-educated and well-motivated people to make this happen and Critical Thinking is where its gonna start.

Now....James..... would you guess I've been pretty clear about this?

FWIW.
I am now starting to see why you're having a hard time adapting to Mississippi. You seem to be quite outspoken about a place with which you aren't very familiar. I'm going to give you some friendly and honest advice. No native wants to be around a know-it-all Yankee. No Mississippian wants to be "enlightened" by someone who just moved to the state. It's just that simple. Most Mississipians can think for themselves, and do not need some newcomer telling them that they're doing everything wrong.

"Trolling" in an internet forum isn't a reference to the big green monster that hides under bridges. It's a reference to a form of hunting or fishing where bait is dragged behind the hunter causing prey to bite. In a classic Troll post the OP doesn't have anything meaningful to say; the post only exists to invoke a response. Like someone starting a pro-Nazi thread in a Jewish forum. Everyone who responds to a troll post has taken the bait. Personally, I interpreted the OP as someone who had incorrect information about the state in general and made incorrect assumptions on that information. Apparently, the OP thought that the majority of MS residents are poor black folk. My first post addressed that.

You've listed the very reasons why I like MS and visit often... plus I was born and raised there and my very large extended family mostly still lives there. I hope you enjoy the state and its people. And yes, I too hope Mississippi always stays "red".

Thank you, what a great explanation (she adds "and he's from Mississippi").

If racism is not still a problem in MS then it's the only place on the planet where it's not...

Thank you for totally missing the point. However that seems to fit the theme of this thread.

Excuse me, but I have heard that "Love-it-or-Leave-It"-Crap since when I came out of the Service back in the 70-s. My response is that if people in my adopted state don't want to hear a bit of 1st Amend Right, they forego the privilege of being able to complain about Crime, Bad Schools, Poor Economic Development and a Dim Future compared to other States. My own experience has been that Opportunity does not come around begging and pleading to be availed of an Indifferent Mindset. And while I may not KNOW Mississippi just yet, I am certainly familiar with Passivity and Reluctance when I see it. I firmly believe that "most Mississipians can think for themselves, but thinking about where your next self-indulgence is coming from does not qualify.

Sometimes you have to stop being a resident and start being a citizen. FWIW.
