I have seen threads like this in other forums and wanted to offer my opinions on their general area, because they are often disputed:

1. I believe southern MS is anywhere south of I-20. Some people may only consider it to be the counties along the coast and up to Hattiesburg (where Univ. of Southern Mississippi) is. But I-20 goes through more of the borderline south to central MS area on its trek across the state, because most of the state is north of I-20.

2. Central MS, I believe, is I-20 northward to US-82. This would include Jackson, the Golden Triangle area, and southern parts of the Delta region. However, the NWS in Jackson puts Oktibbeha and Lowndes counties in northeast MS, and I still believe this to be true, as the counties are split on either side of US-82.

3. North MS, therefore, is anything north of US-82. I think people generally believe this to be true.

What are you guys' opinions on the locations of these geographic regions of the state?

1. South Mississippi- to me is anything below Jefferson, Copiah, Simpson, Smith, Jasper and Clarke.

2. Central Mississippi-Start with the line above and go northward stopping at Washington, Humphreys, Holmes, Attala, Choctaw, Oktibbeha and Lowndes.

3. North Mississippi. Start with those counties listed above and go north.

Highway 82 and Highway 84 are the dividing lines. The towns along those routes have characteristics of the areas above and below them.

This is only my opinion, but I have always felt that anything south of Magee seems like South MS.

Anything North of Winona is North MS

The rest is Central MS

That’s generally how I see it as well.
