The population of Mississippi, by census estimates, should hit 3 million by the end of 2014!

The Census counted the total population of the state at 2,967,299 in 2010. Census estimates put it at 2,984,926 in 2012, two more years of this sustained growth and Mississippi will finally break the 3 million mark.

Mississippi currently ranks 31st in population, behind Iowa at 3,074,186 and followed by Arkansas at 2,949,131. However, both states' growth is faster than Mississippi, so it will not catch Iowa any time soon, and will likely be passed up by Arkansas in the 2020 Census.

That's a bunch of folks.

Or is it?

In 1900, population of U.S. was 79 million; Mississippi 1.5 million, so 1.9% of the people lived in Mississippi.

1930. U.S. 132 million; Mississippi 2.0; 1.9%

1950. U.S. 152; Mississippi 2.17: 1.4%

1980. U.S. 249; Mississippi: 2.52 M: .9%

2010 U.S. 311; Mississippi 2.9 ; 9%

And that's about where we sit today. You can see the effect of the Great Migration that got going during The Depression and continued on through recent times. For that matter, you can see the effect WWII had on Mississippi, too.
Interesting stuff, demographics.

I put the decimal point in place for ya!

According to Census figures on Wikipedia, Bolivar County (where I live) had its peak population in 1930, and has fewer people now than it did in 1900!

Oh, yeah! Thanks.

Census stuff is interesting. It shows how - at least in Mississippi - we live in a greatly different world than our grandparents.
A while back they had a special on The Dust Bowl days. And they mentioned how many farms were foreclosed on in Mississippi. I can't remember the figures, but it was astounding! The Depression; The Dust Bowl; WWII; the Mississippi River flood of about 1919 (?); it's all part of our history.

My wife's aunt died last month. She was 101, and from Ripley. For her 100th birthday we worked up a book with all the pictures of her life and the notes, etc. It was a great experience both for her and for us.

Maybe Mississippi will actually grow someday, but to be honest with you, I don't really care one way or the other.....

That would be an interesting topic for discussion! Where will Mississippi be in 50 years. Will it have put most of the long lingering stereotypes behind it? Paved a new path towards the future, attracting businesses, educated and young professionals, tackle the poverty issue, tackle the obesity epidemic, and restore many of their old and blighted cities?

50 years ago Detroit was a great city, marveled at much as we marvel Seattle or Chicago today, today our view of Detroit is very different. Can Mississippi shed its image and embrace something better?

The places seeing an increase in population are in the north in the Desoto area, Gulf Coast and around Canton and Madison. Southaven over the last 10 years has doubled.

The Great Flood was in 1927, but there were others, like the Flood of 1912.

True, all the cities that are in decent shape are growing, the rest are shrinking or near stagnant. I believe you may want to add Hattiesburg to that list, it has grown several thousand in the last 10 years.
