I went to State for 8 years to get my BA (graphic design) and MFA (computer animation).
It is a fantastic school and a pretty good town. Realize there isn't a whole lot to do in Starkville. It's a fairly small town that has everything you need, but it's not a sprawling metropolis. Luckily though you're just a few hours from everything so all will be well.
Also there are a couple of great bars to hang out in.
Dave's Dark Horse Tavern is my favorite Dive. Great drinks (and drink specials)..great atmosphere (kind of a dark tavernish affair)...amazing food and great people.
We have a pretty wide selection of minority, ethnic, and out of town students and I've never seen any of them being mistreated. Of course I mainly hang out at the Tavern and it's a very relaxed atmosphere that welcomes everybody.
I don't think you'll have any problem at all.
Also you get free pizza for your birthday at the Tavern. 1 large for every four people you bring with you!
edit: My mom is from Walnut Creek and moved here with my dad before I was born so I was born and raised here with a very liberal mindset. And aside from the occasional jackass yammering on about Fox News, I haven't had any problems being a liberal and being in Starkville.
