I'm debating on a career either as an rn to crna or cpa. Currently I have an associates degree in busiiness administration and am enrolled at my university to get a bachelors in accounting. After I get my bachelor's degree I will sit for the CPA exam. What interests me about becoming a CPA is the the opportunity to eventually open my own business. But after doing some research, I realized after you graduate you would have to work a good 50-60 hours a week as an accountant, and I'm not sure if the way is that well. Also, people say it is very tedious and boring. Individuals get burned out quickly. Now I'm pondering the idea of becoming an RN, eventually becoming a CRNA.

A little info about myself: I'm a 25 yr. old female who is a single mom of a 10 month old baby. The career I choose has to give me a work/life balance, and pay very well.

I heard RNs can work three 12 hour shifts per week and have the rest of the time off. Also I heard CRNA love their job and have a great work/life balance while being greatly compensated. I do like helping people, technology, and medicine, just not the "dirty" work. Which is why I would become a CRNA.

So has anyone been a cpa and became an RN or CRNA or vise verses? Are you happy with the switch? Would you do it over again? Any information would be greatly appreciated? Pros and cons of each profession. Thanks.

A friend is a CRNA (in Chattanooga, TN, not Mississippi). His work schedule is a LONG way from 3-12's then off. He has "on call" time, long shifts, overnight shifts, and work on all days of the week including weekends. Also lots of horror stories of having to anesthetize kids with half their heads missing after a motorcycle accident. He does make good money, though, and by working odd hours he's off work quite often during the week.

In the medical field, if you can get a job in a small doctor's office you'll be doing good; usually regular hours, regular patients, etc. Doing shift-work in a hospital, however, sucks. It would be very difficult to manage that with a baby without outside help, specifically, good friends or relatives who can watch your kid at odd hours.

Why not look into the health care administration field? It is a masters degree program, and I would think that with your interest in business and health care you might do very well.

PS....Check out the salaries health care administrators are commanding.

But anyways you can do much more with the accounting degree then get a CPA and selling your soul to a slave driving public accounting firm (and yes they are knows for long hours). Maybe switch to a finance degree. A business degree is very versatile and you can use it for just about anything.
Healthcare is also a good field, with plenty of demand.

No,nursing isn't less hours.
Most nurses have 2nd jobs because the income from the 1st in inadequate(like me).

Forgot to add this, but days shifts are HARD to come by. You might end up on nights.

Lastly, most hospitals don't give you consecutive days off.

For example, you might work Mon,Thursday, and Friday.
An even more cruel schedule might having yohu work Thursday,Friday,Sat,Sun,Mon,Tues.
