I am doing some research to try and help my son who is 24 years old. He is currently living in Texas. We are from NJ. He is an engineer and got a job right out of college in San Antonio. Now the company wants him to (possibly) move to Pascagoula to start another project. We know nothing about Mississippi. I know he would have to find a place to leave where he can commute to Pascagoula easily. He is young, so he would want to live near where there would be people his age. Any help or suggestions on where he should look for an apartment? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated

The best place near Pascagoula is Ocean Springs. Downtown Ocean Springs of exquisite, with many shops, restaurants and some bars, and picturesque tree lined streets. They have a lovely community beach for walking, running, biking, volleyball etc, and a nice yacht club. The main highway through Ocean Springs (Hwy 90) is a typical and fairly nice commercial highway with new-looking grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants, etc.

If for some reason he's not able to find an apartment in Ocean Springs, the next best option is probably across the bay in Biloxi. This is getting to be a bit of a long commute to Pascagoula, at least 30 minutes, but Biloxi is a bustling area that combines a long beachfront, casinos, hotels, an air force base and some nice residential areas.

For the sake of commute, in Biloxi I would probably recommend North Biloxi right off I-10, allowing for a faster interstate commute over to Pascagoula. The intersection of I-10 and Cedar Lake Rd in Biloxi has lots of new development, from apartments to Home Depot type stores to new offices and retail. Nearby at the intersection of I-10 and I-110 is where all the brand-new typical suburban shopping is in the area, i.e. Best Buy, Target, movie theatres, Outback, Lowe's, etc. A new mall is under development at that location presently, i.e. this is a clean, new growth area right by the interstate.

In Pascagoula itself, the nicer neighborhoods are generally closer to the beachfront, which is okay but not beautiful due to the nearby industries (shipbuilding etc). Nevertheless, there is water all around Pascagoula and Moss Point, i.e. paradise for boating, fishing etc. Pascagoula is fine but is a big industrial area and doesn't have the charm of neighboring cities. Another option might be across the bay in Gautier. (pronounced Go-shay). Gautier is located between Pascagoula and Ocean Springs and has a quiet suburban feel, with homes with beautiful water views, nice golf courses etc. But I'm just not familiar with apartments in that area and in terms of activity for young people (restaurants etc), there isn't anything there comparable to Ocean Springs or Biloxi.

The above poster is mostly correct. I'm originally from Pascagoula and lived there until I was 23. Unless you're from the area and have friends and family starting a social network would probably be more difficult than one of the surrounding cities. The night life there is also extremely limited unless your son is a fan of dive bars, not all of which are bad necessarily but there's not much diversity. The only point I disagree on is Guatier, in my personal opinion Guatier offers nothing that is a drastic improvement over Pascagoula and honestly unless rent was substantially cheaper I wouldn't consider it.
In addition, if your son is considering staying as far away as Biloxi, West Mobile may also be an option. Both of my parents worked at Chevron (my dad still does) and they had multiple coworkers that lived in Mobile and seemed to prefer it despite the 35+ minute commute.

If he can stay in TX, that would be the best. San Antonio is a nice city with plenty do. It will be quite a culture shock. I have worked in Pascagoula, and grew up there. Its not a nice area. If he has to move there, I would drive the 20 mins to Ocean Springs. That's what I did.

Many people in Mobile work at the Chevron plant, and most have no desire to move to MS. Mobile isn't a big city, but if you like any sort of "city life" it's your only option.

Someone recommended gulf hills. Does anyone have any info on this area and how it compares to Ocean Springs, or is it in Ocean Springs? Are their any apartments near the water?

Any recommendations for a nice upscale apartment complex in Biloxi near I-10?
