Can anyone give me info about residential neighborhoods in Jackson?
Fondren, Belhaven, and Belhaven Heights have been talked about in recent posts. I'm looking for lesser known but solid, stable family areas with inexpensive real estate inside the city, where racial tensions and crime are not a major factor (we're a more than one race family). Also, any areas you might avoid... Thanks in advance. |

Crime is a problem anywhere you live in Jackson. I don't know why you want to live in the city, but if you would consider outside of the city, Pearl has some inexpensive real estate. Having a multiracial family shouldn't be a problem anywhere in the area.

I think it is a mixed bag in Jackson. I have business clients witih their primary home in Jackson but with the getaway home in Oxford (toward Tupelo). I believe that if your income is high enough that there are good areas around Jackson. But moderate incomes? As to the mixed concerns, Mississippi is no worse than anywhere else.

Northeast Jackson has become afforable over the past few years. This is the 4th Precinct and the lowest crime area in the city. Lake Trace neighborhood is good and so is Crownpoint. Houses are in the $170,000 range. The areas around Plantation Boulevard are still nice but cheaper. A 3/2 costs about $110,000. The ZIP for that area is 39211 if you want to check realtor.com. Good luck.

My parents live in the Eastover area in NE Jackson. Eastover is one of the nicer areas in Jackson. After having lived with them for about 18 years, I would strongly recommend this area.

I agree with SashaBlue and Beamseight. Those areas are good places to live. I looked at a couple of houses in the Briarwood east section, and really liked them, but finally settled in Madison, where my son and his family live. Many of my good friends, though, live in the areas they mentioned.

You would be better off looking in Rankin County/Madison County. Reasons? Jackson (Hinds County) has the highest property tax rate of the 3 counties. It also has the highest vehicle license fees. This area, depending on where you are coming from is small. It's not Atlanta or Nashville for example. Good thing is that race issues are not a problem. The movies about 1960's Mississippi are history. I'm from California, so I am not a native born. I love it here, though.
Rankin/Madison schools are among the best in the state. Both areas are close enough to drive for activities in Jackson. Best restaurants are in Hinds and Madison counties, as Rankin is dry (beer only in restaurants.) Check out the Resevoir area lots of housing that is still affordable. Reservoir East comes to mind. Big yards, nice newer homes. Northwest Rankin school district. Summer sucks here. Other 3 seasons are excellent. Good Luck |

There's a number of reasons I'm looking at Jackson. One is a little unusual.
There are some extremely cheap properties there. I'm looking for something so cheap that I can use it almost like a storage unit, secure it and my things there, travel outside the country, and have one foot in the US that I can come back to just in case. |

Thanks for your posts in the MS forums, Auntbee.
There would be obvious challenges to making this idea work. I'm thinking proper locks, lights, security, and roommate/caretaker. |
