Does Tunica offer any...
...decent accomidations? I have been to Tunica on a day trip and found it to be a clean area with easy access to everything and fun. I was looking to go back for a weekend getaway with my wife and I virtual-toured every casino resort and found every room to look like something from the early 1980's. The worst looking one was actually the largest...the Goldstrike. My question is, where should we stay? Are any of these places going to be renovated? Where are the best places to eat? I know this is not Las Vegas and Tunica does not target the "high rollers", but come on...give people something at least half way decent!!!

What is it you're wanting? Most people aren't going to Tunica for the rooms! We've stayed at Sam's, Goldstrike, Horseshoe, and one other I can't think of the name of that you have to catch the shuttle to go to the casinos....so they are hotel rooms....that's it. As far as eating, it ain't so special unless they've changed a lot in the last year.

I am wanting something on the level of a Marriott or a Renaissance Hotel. I think I am asking way too much from Mississippi.

I think you're asking too much of Tunica...the only reason people go there is to gamble, not to see the sights or enjoy fine dining. You'd probably be happiest staying in Memphis and driving over. The casino hotels are not Days Inn, neither are they the Waldorf. The food is adequate but nothing to write home about, and they don't have the free buffets like Vegas. Stay in Memphis if you want to do more than gamble and require more amenities than a bed and bath.
Look at the site for the Grand, although you will have to catch the shuttle back and forth to the casino strip.

I don't even live in MS and I find the comments about "asking too much out of Mississippi" and "does anyone have computers in MS" pretty offensive. Who wants to respond to your question when you start off making fun of the people that you're questioning?
It's a cluster of casinos in the middle of farm land. Why would there be a Marriott out there? People go to gamble, not sit in the room. If the casinos made their rooms too wonderful, people would sit there and not spend their money gambling. And other hotel chains aren't going to waste money building a great hotel down there when the hotels themselves don't make money; again, people drive down there to gamble only.
I agree, the hotel rooms don't screen "contemporary" but who cares. The rooms are Resorts I thought were the most modern, and the Grand's rooms seemed modern too. But I don't pay that much attention; if I wanted to sit in the lap of luxury in a hotel room, I wouldn't be vacationing in Tunica.

I firmly agree.
I'm originally from MS and have made plenty of cracks about it in my lifetime (all in good fun), but people there take great pride in their state. Mississippians are usually pretty quick to offer service to anyone who asks. To ask a question and then get offensive because someone didn't answer within 12 hours is just rude.
I've passed by Tunica and it looks nice at night with all the lights. I don't know about the hotels, but I would imagine they would be comparable to ones on the Gulf Coast (perhaps). I don't see the problem.
It seems it would be best if you didn't stay in Mississippi.

Well, I am thankful it wasn't only me that got hit wrong by this one and I thank you all for your graciousness. Fortunately, the Mississippi posters (and pearlbob) are probably the nicest folks on this forum.
While others might see shortcomings in Tunica, some of us remember it was once a very, very depressed area with only cotton fields. That there is any commerce at all is miraculous, and the changes have brought financial stability to an area that sorely needed it. I daresay almost anyone in the area will tell you their quality of life has improved in one way or another since the advent of the casinos, be it in better roads, better employment, better education, or simply not being at the end of a dirt road.
BTW, Kentuckydad, you would have done better to pose this question to people in the cosmopolitan Memphis area...it's much closer than Oxford.

Don't stay at the Goldstrike. The rooms at the Grand have been recently renovated and are decently nice (like a Hilton). I'm not sure if all of them have been renovated, so ask for a renovated room. The really nice rooms in Tunica are reserved for high rollers, and you can't reserve them. As for dining, all the restaurants at the Horseshoe are good. The Grand has the next best restaurants. Stay away from the buffets and the restaurants at the other casinos.

Yes, the food buffet at the Goldstrike was lacking, so the rooms cannot be too good. I will look into the Grand. Thanks for the info.
