According to a report given at
Building Online- 275,000 HOMES LOST; BUILDERS TESTIFY BEFORE CONGRESS ON REBUILDING IN HURRICANE KATRINA'S AFTERMATH,
The American Redcross estimated approximately 275,000 homes were destroyed in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama during Hurricaine Katrina.
I have no idea if any of the above is factual. I did live on the MISSISSIPPI coast during Katrina and have seen firsthand the damage and I believe the numbers.
To get to the point, please provide some facts concerning disasters in scotland and facts on how fast you recovered.

I don't know of any big disasters like that but i do know that we would have recovered by now, they throw houses up faster than lightening here. Especially these new builts, kit houses.
It's been what 2 years now? Scotland and Missisissippi are very different places. How could i say, we are more progressive as a country, modern buildings, big cities which are thriving. Just 2 different cultures and ways of doing things.
Still, Mississippi is a lovely state it has a long way to go but it doesn't mean its a bad place or anything.

A few Greenville pics
I had to make a trip to Greenville this week for my brother-in-law's funeral. I managed to get a few pictures of the area. These two are of the Lake Ferguson waterfront.

Another waterfront pic. This used to be a public swimming area. Note the displaced seagulls:
