Hello Folks, I've been watching this forum for awhile now. Would you indulge me and tell me what it is that the people of NE Mississippi do for recreation. No wrong answers here. I am pretty open minded about "fun". So tell me what do you do with your spare time or the time we set aside for ourselves and family.

Recreation. What first comes to mind are the outside activites. Hunting & fishing, 4 wheelers, boating. These activities are popular and families tend to do these together. There are limitations on some of the normal big city activities.

Sounds great Spinrider2000.

Indoors outdoors I don't care. If its quilting, crafting reading or tree climbing. I want to hear from the people in NE Mississippi. I've met folks who play Appalachian Dulcimers in groups, hunter/fishermen 4 wheelers all kinds of folks. If I end up in Mississippi, I want to know the options. I loved the countryside when I visited over Labor day and will visit again soon.

May I also add you should check out the websites of the local chamber of commerce, or better yet, City Data, for the specific areas you are interested in visiting. You will find many "places of interest" or "things to do" that will fill in the blanks for you. This area is also known for their swap meets, flea markets and "sit around the campfire" type of entertainment during the weekends. Welcome to the Deep South.

Also, coming to mind there are a lot of crafts. There is also flea market type of activities. Tupelo and Ripley come to mind. My hobby is guitars, so there are various activities.

I love music. Any and all music pretty much. I've researched as much as I can on the web. I visited once already and will again. I could potentially move in 2008 or 09 if I plan well. I posted recently about mushrooming in Mississippi. Either it isnt common or folks are tight lipped about their favorite patches. I can fish hike and camp all weekend and love every minute of it. I just like lots of options.

Careful there, boy, mushrooms, of the illicit variety are often farmed in the dark undercurrents of the vegetable gardens. Might be the reason folks are keeping their zippers shut on this one. Ya' think?

Sassy, there are many edibile fungi in the woods. I dont need to know about any of the "magic" variety. Morels are probably my favorite but im partial to others I can pick by sight and dont know the local names of.

Hi ya Squid! Well, what a question, now let's see if I can add to the answers.

Of course, my life revolves around my son's baseball in which practice starts early January--yup, we are already in high gear. Then we have the games to go to all the time. In Tupelo, there is arena football, ice hockey, and most love the college sports at Starkville and Oxford. All types, baseball, basketball and football.

Our area is quite known for it's festivals. There is the Gum Tree Festival in Tupelo, this has a marathon with it as well. Hmm, Pontotoc has the Bodock Festival, Amory has the Railroad Festival...you see a pattern? LOL.

Many people who are into racing go to the Nascar races that are in neighboring states. Then, there is the Tenn Tom for water play as well as fishing. The casinos are in Northwestern MS at Tunica and on the Gulf Coast. Hunting and fishing are some peoples desire.

Then, there are the smaller communities who have a local place for singing and dancing. The one close by here is family friendly. Lee County is wet, so there are bars in town. other than this...hmm...

Sounds like quite a variety of things to do. I will be there week or so before spring break .. I hope the weather warms some by then .. Im freezing my buns off in Texas. Fishing sounds like a plan .. been years, but I still think of it as good fun.
