Might it change anytime soon? I am surprised it stays as is with Mississippi having a huge African American community. Georgia changed their flag to remove it years ago. But perhaps that was only possible due to the efforts of white liberals from Atlanta (think REM and other celebrities)?

One thing white Mississippians are, is stubborn. They absolutely don't want anyone telling them to change the way they're doing something, even if the thing they're doing is completely wrong. Even if the thing they're doing costs them money, or jobs, or growth.

Mississippi is about 30% black, even with 95%black support, a significant number of whites would need to support the bill for the flag to change. So far that hasn't happened.

They had a ballot initiative about 15 yrs ago and it failed at the polls. JacksonPanther is absolutely correct. The NCAA has said that Mississippi will never host a regional tournament because of the flag but people here don't care.

I do wish for just one presidential election (not talking about just MS here but all states), the rural whites would vote Democrat, and the blacks, Hispanics, and Jews would vote Republican.

I think the MS state flag is beautiful and I've wondered if they might consider replacing the blue "X' with a blue cross. It seems like that would be a look that would appeal to almost everyone.

I don't think so. To similar to the current one. I like the one that had to replace it when they did the ballot initiative.

MS is 37% black, 60% white. The largest black percentage of any state. MS will be the first majority black state, but that is still 30 or so years off.

MS is never going to host any type of NCAA tournament (minus those earned as being the number one seed - like baseball, and we are regular hosts for those) anyway.

I'm amazed Stein Mart (yes, a Jewish-owned department store chain) started in Mississippi and has stores in a lot of poor small towns in the South. Perhaps the Steins originally immigrated to New Orleans (a city with a medium-sized Jewish community) but moved up the Mississippi River because they then could have a near-monopoly on clothing retail in a very underserved region, the same way Walmart grew from being a small Arkansas operation to a world power?

I highly doubt that will happen. Black and white birth rates are similar, if it was 37% Mexican maybe, but it isn't.

Also, states have been majority black, including MS, LA, and SC in US history. The blacks lost their majority during the great migration when they moved on up to Detroit or Chicago.

It'll have to wait another generation at least. The only change I can imagine with even remote plausibility is a sudden influx of people from neither Mississippi NOR a state that borders it. The most likely places for that to happen are the Coast and DeSoto County. There are other areas of the state with significant opposition to the present flag, but they're not populous enough to add clout to the "change the flag" movement.
