Default moving to vicksburg

Hi All,

I'm thinking of moving to Vicksburg. I've lived most of my life in the upper Midwest (love the winters and I know I will miss them down south buy hey - early spring is good too!), and the mid-Atlantic.

I was in Vicksburg about a year ago for 4 months, during winter of all times so I missed the heat and humidity but also didn't think the temperary gig could become a good career move so I didn't bother checking out any real estate, or neighborhoods or apt. complexes, etc. I was staying at a B&B during the time I was there.

My big questions to the group are: does anyone have recommendations on places to rent (I hate complexes but sometimes you have to do what you have to do) or buy (prefer once spring comes and more houses are on the market). I know the Marcus Bottoms area is not good.

Secondly, I bike to work here; even in winter - even in the dark. Is it going to be safe to cycle in Vicksburg - not so much from having someone jump out of the bushes at me (but one has to think about that everywhere) as much as from will drivers even be looking for a cyclist in the pre-dawn darkness?

I'm lucky here because I take the bike path for the majority of the time.

Any advice is appreciated.

You'll be disappointed in Vicksburg. Believe me. Look to North Mississippi near Memphis or the Coast so you can find something to do.

Vicksburg?? No... stay away, stay very far away. I lived there for 7 years and it was horrible. They are still fighting the Civil War. No tolerance and the people are like robots - doing what they do - no thinking - just moving. It's a nightmare. The casinos brought in so much crime that businesses and stores are leaving right and left. And the flooding! OMG... I can't tell you how many times homes were flooded out when the river would rise, especially the Halls Ferry area. Look at places in Northeast MS but stay away from the SW area. My parents live there and Katrina brought in so much crime it is unreal... home invasions, drugs, you name it. Katrina shook up all those folks in the bayous of LA and they all came to MS. What a mess.

Interesting. Thanks for the opinions. However, if I move to MS, the job is in Vicksburg so I'll have to live somewhere in SW MS. Would Clinton be better?

Clinton is a good choice or anywhere between Clinton and V'burg like Bovina, Edwards or Flowers. Good luck!

Unhappy moving to Vicksburg

Just ran across your post and I am sure you have already settled somewhere, but I need to respond to two of the comments. First of all, I have been here 25 years and find vicksburg a very friendly community. It is not ideal for riding bikes, but there are places nearby that are great roadtrips for bike rides. It only floods in a small neighborhood, most of the city is built on bluffs and hills. We don't have more crime than anywhere else. A lot depends on if you are looking for schools, ect.... I would not recommend that you move to Clinton based on two people's comments. Check it out for yourself. The casinos have brought some problems, but the benefits outweigh them in my opinion. They have provided jobs and an increase in tax base that has allowed our community to build new parks and add landscaping. The taxes have also contributed to our schools. Vicksburg is not a bad place to live. The people that are unhappy here, would be unhappy anywhere. "Wherever you go, there you are."

Two areas - Hamilton Heights and the Halls Ferry area floods all the time. Personal friends have horror stories.

Vicksburg isn't that bad. It's beautiful. But it is far from much.

Not alot to do. Great if you're an outdoorsman!
