Disappearing Mississippi City (Gulfport, Indianola, Oxford: home, elementary school, garden)

There was once a community on the Gulf Coast with the grand name of "Mississippi City". It would have been even grander had Ole Miss located there. In the end, Gulfport swallowed MC. All that remains of its past are the name on a Methodist church:

Wow...one vote made the difference in Ole Miss being in Oxford over the Mississippi Gulf Coast. I never knew about Mississippi City being in the running. Imagine the course of history had Mississippi City been the home to Ole Miss.

Courthouse Road got its name from the time when Mississippi City was the county seat.

Well, at least Mississippi City didn't get wiped out literally, like Indianola, TX did:

Indianola is a ghost town located on Matagorda Bay in Calhoun County, Texas, United States. The community, once the county seat of Calhoun County, is a part of the Victoria, Texas, Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1875, the city had a population of 5,000, but on September 15 of that year, a powerful hurricane struck, killing between 150 and 300 and almost entirely destroying the town. Indianola was rebuilt, only to be wiped out on August 19, 1886, by another intense hurricane, which was followed by a fire. Indianola was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1963, marker number 2642

Like hurricane stories?

Read "Isaac's Storm", which is the story of the Galveston hurricane. In 1900, before hurricanes had names, there was a hurricane which nearly destroyed Galveston. It is the worst storm in history, as far as I know. 6 - 8,000 people died.
