I grew up in the south, been so long ago..... I'm bringing a group of Youth's to Gulfport MI, to help rebuild the communitiy. I could sure use some help on what to wear, bug repelents etc. Looking forward to helping our friends down South, just don't want to be un-prepared. Thanks, Howard

As you well know it is very humid during the summer here. First, sunscreen, second bug repellent. Clothing should be cool and loose, shorts and tee shirts, and possibly layered if you intend to work clearing brush. You know how those darn red bugs, chiggers and ticks can be. Also, for working in undergrowth and brush, boots are a must. There are snakes to worry about as well. Avon Skin So Soft does pretty well at repelling insects and keeping your skin hydrated. And don't forget - lots of bottled water as heat stroke can sneak up on you in a hurry. Hope this will help.

Packing lists
Thanks for your reply Sassy Girl. Were bringing down several youth's to Gulfport to help rebuild and could use any input from all locals on; where not to go, where to go, if there is any time and energy left after rebuilding work. Thanks in advance.

For those into nature, The Crosby Arboretum in Picayune is fantastic, and very affordable. If you get the chance, weather permitting, a canoe trip on one of the creeks (I recommend Black Creek) is fun, and a great way to cool off. There is a water slide park in Gulfport that my children say is a lot of fun, I haven't been there. It mostly depends on what everyone would be interested in doing. If what you want isn't immediately available, it is a short drive west to New Orleans, (the Aquarium and the Zoo are fantastic) or east to Mobile.

Gretchen is right about the side trips. If you do go to the Big Easy, be sure to take the kids to Jackson Square. The architecture is awesome. Local artist gather and for a fee one can have a portrait done. And be CERTAIN to go across the street to Cafe' Du Monde (the French Market) for beignets. They are to die for and New Orleans is the only place in the world you can get authentic beignets. Check back and let us know about your experiences.
