I can tell you about the people...I moved there in 2004 (left after Katrina) so I'm from the north so not use to the friendliness lol. I told my dauther's grandma, I'm just driving up the street in some random neighborhood, and if people are outside, they wave at you...shocked the mess outta me lol. Now you do run into some idiots, like anywhere, but I would say 99% of the people are nice.

As far as safe neighborhoods, just like any city, Gulfport has some good ones and some bad ones. I personally like Orange Grove and the area by JD.

I lived in Gulfport after Katrine, just moved back to El Paso TX a few months ago to take care of a sick Family member. I miss the heck outta Gulfport. I have a hard time saying anything bad about the area because I enjoyed it so much.

You'll be tempted to work in the Casinos, if you can handle no vacation time, a point system that if your late you get points and after so many points your fired, and the stress of that industry you will be fine working as a waitress in one of them. They are still rebuilding and every place is hiring there.. need people who will work.

Rent will be High.. so will the cost of living.. you'll be amazed at the people.. they have a inner strength that will inspire you. There is the Southern charm too, and still in some circles that southern racism.. but its not as bad as you may think it is.. its more experienced as a quiet thing there.. the Gulf Coast seems more open minded than the inner parts of the state.

Katrina kicked them in the teeth and hard.. but they still smile and bare it.. The fourth of July fireworks were amazing there in Gulfport.

As for neighborhoods.. Orange Grove up above I10 is nice.. so is Ocean Springs and D'iberville just got its very own police dept. and is a nice place too.

I really miss Gulfport and the area. I miss the people, and my job there and so much more.. it really grabbed hold of me. Now to be fair, There are issues and problems too, something you may want to drive down and check the place out for a week or two to get a grip on, like traffic and some drug issues.. but for me, it was not enough to make me want to leave.. leaving was the hardest thing I ever did.

Good luck, and welcome to Mississippi, its like coming home.

It's really too bad that Gulfport has become what it is - high rents with still low paying jobs and too much traffic. My family is from Gulfport and I lived there for many years as a child. I use to enjoy going back to that small town feeling (I live in Phoenix, AZ) which wasn't there when I went back 1 month before Katrina. Grandma says its been more like a ghost town since Katrina . Haven't been back since although I should. Suppose I'd be too afraid to see what its really like now. The casinos, although maybe providing some with jobs, in my opinion have ruined that small town feeling. Of course this is coming from someone who hasn't lived there as an adult. Perhaps no matter where we grow up we always want to remember it in a certain way.

I work in Gulfport, and I don't think it is too hard to find a job. It may be harder finding a good paying job. Rents are still high....don't see that going down any time soon. If you are wondering about what to do...it depends on what you like. The Gulfport Department of Leisure Services always does things like Easter Egg hunts and pictures with Santa for free. There are alot of very active churches in the area that have lots of events going on. The casinos offer entertainment.
I have lived down here all my life, and I wouldn't want to move anywhere else.

Long Beach would be a great choice...safe, very affordable, good schools, and on the beach.
