Jackson question
Hello all,
My wife and I may be relocating to Jackson. We are both pretty liberal and I would like to know if there are any older areas of Jackson that have a bohemian feel??
Thanks for your help.

Bohemian would be the Fondren area. You can find pretty good neighborhoods if you shop around in that area.

Yes, I agree Fondren or Belhaven has nice diversity. I love Alta Woods too, hopefully it will get to that status one day.

Belhaven and Fondren
To be totally truthful, you will have to watch out for crime.

Belhaven has a good neighborhood feel to it. There's the Belhaven Market that takes place on weekends with booths where some wannabe chefs have pre-cooked meals that are very good, handmade items for sale, fresh veggies. Very nice. Reminds me of Broad Ripple in Indianapolis in some ways. You can check it out online at
The Greater Belhaven Market - LocalHarvest
The neighborhood assoc. is at:
Greater Belhaven Neighborhood Foundation - Jackson, MS 39202
Jackson Free Press has info on both Fondren and Belhaven at:
Jackson Free Press | Heart of 'The Creative Class': <BR>Belhaven, Fondren Residents Build A City To Love
And you can read about Fondren at:
fondren | right in the middle of everything
I attend church in Fondren and love the neighborhood, though I live in Madison. Often eat at one of the Fondren neighborhood restaurants after church. Both neighborhoods have a McDade's grocery which is well liked in Jackson.
Both areas have many residents I believe would self-describe as "liberal." I had a psychology doctoral resident whom I supervised...from San Diego. When looking around, she chose Belhaven because of the neighborhood activities.
Come on down!

I just wanted to chime in and say thank you to Merigold - you've brought back many wonderful memories of being raised in Belhaven on Myrtle Street. I haven't been there in many years - my folks are now in Madison - but I'll be going back to the old stomping grounds soon. I guess Power Elementary is still there?
Such a great neighborhood to grow up in - even more years ago than I would like to admit....

Come on down on any Saturday starting soon, and enjoy Belhaven Market! It's amazing how many new, modern, safe-looking apartment complexes have sprung up in the Belhaven area. My counseling office is on the edge of Belhaven, and is very convenient to the entire area.
Great restaurants in the area: Broad St. Bakery, a deli with lots of sweet rolls, breads, desserts and also lunch and dinner items. Saturday breakfast/brunch is always crowded! It's near where Bennigan's used to be (now Hooters). Bravo is where Sundance used to be...great food, and a brick pizza oven. A new restaurant, Basil's that has upscale deli food. Primos has moved out to Lakeland and Lake Harbor. Then, if you branch out to Ridgeland and Madison, the sky's the limit on new restaurants! Amazing!

Wow. I grew up on Linden, now live on St. Ann. Guess you remember the old short street behind it (University, I think) that was plowed under for the interstate. Power is still there, though now it is known as Power APAC for the smarty kids. Laurel Park has become a gathering place for families with little kids. Added a nice playground. Jitney Jungle, Parkin's Pharmacy, Primos on North State, Shady Nook (the little gas station on Poplar where the Coke machine was a nickle is now a real estate office). All gone or changed. Those were the days.
