I also hate to compare people and places. I keep hearing "don't move to Jackson!" "move to Madison,..." Crime occurs in both places, Jackson and Madison. I've lived in Jackson over 15 years, never burglared, purse snatched, or assaulted. The most was a window smashed on my car the year I moved here. Many are denying criminal activity in places like Madison, cause that is the image that needs to be portrayed. So, people flock, and find out later.

Thank you for your insight, that is really sad how people can be. I guess we are in the last days and people will be people. The sad part is these same people say they are christians, we should welcome everyone and not be so clickey. (sorry I can't spell today) I will continue to seek God on this. I'm not 100% set on Mississippi anymore. I hope things turn around for you and your family. Kids can really be cruel at times.

Ellygirl, everything you said is true. Please don't hold it against us; you know, a lot of Mississippians have crazy aunts hidden away. I know my family has several! Maybe now they have access to the forum!
You aren't imagining things. I lived on the Reservoir, just as Madison was getting going and noone wanted to live over there then. My dad lived in Ocean Springs (parents were divorced). People around here don't see when things are "tacky"; it drives me nuts! My dad thinks his area is the best thing since sliced bread and it just isn't.
I know it's very disappointing when you had another vision in mind for your life here.
The best advice is what others have offered. Get involved in a favorite volunteer thing- something you like to do. I don't really like volunteering at my child's school because it's one of the least open places. I do a lot of stuff with history or preservation. I've met a lot of truly influential &, more importantly, good people.
I know several people from college who live in Madison. It's my impression that people from a lot of places live there. Suburbia has become less friendly in general. You'd probably be happier in an historic type district, if Jackson has any decent ones since Gen. Sherman blew through there long ago.

Paula, you may have to look for some group that is full of transplants to Mississippi, you may find some people you have things in common with.

Thanks, I will look into that. I was pretty angry when I wrote that response - I still haven't found a job, but then the unemployment rate is 6.8% here, so it is no wonder. I will always love this place - so many good memories and I was born here - just having a very hard time adjusting....

"Nature lovers" who can find nothing to do in central Mississippi? You aren't looking! Lefluers Bluff...Natchez Trace Parkway...Rocky Springs...Holmes State Park...Okatoma River...Ross Barnett Reservoir...Black Creek....That's just off the top of my head. There is so much more. Jackson may not be a hotbed of activity, but central MS is certainly not lacking in opportunities for nature lovers.

Where
Whenever I read threads on this subject I always want to know where are all the other places that have all this warm, friendly 'inclusion' toward people they barely know. Everything the original poster described is like the majority of 21st century urban/suburban America. This particular era of modern life is often a cold and alienating place. So, if anything, it sounds like that part of MS. is right in step with the mostly typical American experience these days.

Isn't that the truth. That's why I will not live in a suburb unless I absolutely have to. Fortunately, my options are more open, as I don't have kids. Although some suburbs are better than others in some respects, I have yet to find one that is truly "me" (and I've lived in Dallas, Memphis, and Jackson)
