My partner and I have modest means. So many of the lesbian/gay communities I have heard of are for the wealthy. We would love to find any community where we could buy or build for around $100,000 or less. Any information would be greatly appreciated. By the way we are retired and not interested in primative surroundings!

Jackson is progressive and you can find homes for near that price and lower, especially in areas that are up and coming, like certain areas in west Fondren (west of State Street). There are some great fixer uppers there. The community is very welcoming also, and there's lots to do within walking distance. Check out Fondren Renaissance Foundation for more information.
The more established areas of Fondren will have home prices ranging from $130k to over $1M, just for reference.

Foundren Presbyterian (PCUSA) & St Andrews Cathedral, both in Jackson, would be great fits for a professional lesbian couple. CSS is more an outpost than a place to live. Stay away from the coast, it is not stable yet. Oxford, not far from Memphis, home of Ole Miss, is a very progressive and charming town. Hattiesburg did have a large lesbian community but it has been 10 years since I have known anything about it.

Hattiesburg would be a good area with homes easy to find in the $100,000 range. It's also located within easy drives of Jackson, the Coast, Mobile Al., & New Orleans. Ovett which has been mentioned is only 15 minutes from town.

Bay St Louis is rebuilding and Ocean Springs looks like nothing hit it. I'd suggest either of those towns.
