There used to be a lesbian community close to Laurel. Don't know if it's still there or not. For the life of me, I can't think of the name of the town though.

Yes, I too remember a lesbian community near Laurel. Another place would be Fondren area, very progressive community.

Ovett is in Jones County near Laurel, so not very close to Fondren.

The lesbian community in Ovette is called Camp Sister Spirit. They have been around for nearly 15 years and seem to be quite stable. I've visited a few times to volunteer with them. Interestingly, there are two Unitarian churches in the area, one in Hattiesburg and one Ellisville. The Fondren neighborhood in Jackson is indeed progressive and charming. The epicenter of the progressive community is around Rainbow Foods Co-Op and Cups, if it's still there. Ocean Springs, east of Gulfport, and Bay St. Louis on the western edge of the MS coast, are (or were) pleasant and progressive places. I haven't been to O.S. since Katrina, but B.S.L. was utterly devastated by the direct hit from the storm.

The Unitarian Church on State street in Jackson is also welcoming to lesbians.
