I believe Governor Bilbo (early 1920s) pushed for combing MSU/UM and moving to Jackson. Would have great for the State. Considering poor resources, both universities have done well especially in the past 20 years or so, but are hamstrung academically by the Ayers settlement.

I would love to know the backstory.

Struggling here lately, "combing" above should be "combining."

I too read that story. Considering UM was founded in 1848, and MSU in 1878, I figure the toothpaste was already out of the tube as far as combining them by 1920.

So many bad decisions were made due to 'divisions' back in those days. Keeping UM and MSU separate because the rich white kids did not want to go to school with the poor white kids, then locating MSU in Starkville rather than Meridian (because the cadets would get in too much trouble).

The only solution now is to all go forward and attempt to grow together. It can be done, in certain locations.
