Hey folks. I've been lurking a bit around your forum hoping to gain a little insight into the area. I'm currently in Minneapolis but have been contemplating a move back to FL, having previously lived in Sarasota. Home prices and property taxes along the Gulf coast led me to look further and further up the panhandle until I found my search engine in MS. There are very few places in the country where you can live near the coast without spending big dollars. I'm semi retired and care for my disabled brother, so limited income. I'm looking for a 3/2 under 150K. Less is better as I'm looking to keep monthly expenses to a minimum.

I've spent a lot of time in New Orleans and like the idea of being close without actually living in the city. I'd like to be near the water in an X flood zone. I'm checking addresses against a flood map while I browse.

Heat and humidity generally agree with me so all good there.

One thing that concerns me is access to decent grocery stores. I tend to use a lot of natural and organic products. I'm not seeing much.

How are the beaches? I hear they aren't as nice as FL.

Safety isn't a huge concern but I'd like to avoid any particularly nasty neighborhoods.

Overall living expenses seem fairly low. I know auto tags are pricey.

That's about the extent of my knowledge. What am I missing? Thanks for reading. Any input is appreciated.

This will be tight in a good neighborhood, but doable. This house will be older and likely have maintenance issues.

Not a ton of organic/natural, but if you look hard, you can find these items

The barrier islands keep the water stagnant and murky, this is why Mississippians "go to the beach" in LA (Lower Alabama - Gulf Shores - Fort Walton/Destin area)

That is only for newer/expensive vehicles, prices will be much lower for the average five-year-old vehicle), plus no yearly inspection expenses.

Medical care in most of MS is usually not top notch, so you have that consider. Many people travel to Houston, Nashville, etc for cancer treatment. I would look North of I-20, make sure you have insurance thoroughly vetted before signing a contract. There are some great places to live on the MS Gulf Coast, plus the casinos will give you a lot of options for part-time work.

Good luck!
