Just 13.3% of adults in this Southern state binge or heavily drink, much less than the comparable national share of 18.0%. Despite the link between excessive drinking and a myriad of health problems, states with lower drinking rates tend to report worse health outcomes than states with higher drinking rates. In Mississippi, 22.2% of adults report being in fair or poor health — the third largest share of any state. This could be a function of income, as states with lower drinking rates also tend to have lower incomes, and poorer states generally report poorer health outcomes. Mississippi has the lowest median household income of all states at $41,754 a year and the highest poverty rate at 20.8%.
While excessive drinking is never healthy, it is only one behavioral factor that can affect health. For example, lack of exercise can lead to obesity and heart problems, and in Mississippi, 31.9% of adults lead completely sedentary lives, the highest share among all states and well above the national average of 22.0%.

Hmmm, I've heard you say you wanted to retire to Alabama and Tennessee, which are both ranked worse on this list, yet you are using this list to run down Mississippi only.

Umm, I don't know if you understand, MS is the 46th least drunk state (one of the soberest), I don't think (I assume most would agree) that is a bad thing?
I posted it because it is about Mississippi and, although I usually don't put much stock in these type of surveys/rankings, this one seems pretty accurate to me.
Being toward the end of this particular ranking is a good thing in my opinion, but I'm not a big drinker either.

Indeed it is. Title says "America's drunkest states" (no "the" in the title), thus suggesting that you are discussing, well let's see, maybe America's drunkest states rather than America's soberest states.
We can blame the media/article as well - USA today article should have started with "America's drunkest state" but they want everyone to scroll down and down so that they can get that click adverting money. That's the state of the media today.
