My 4 children attended Mt. Salus Christian School for 11 years. (until 2005) We sacrificed to send them there, and feel it was a good investment. Especially in their younger years. All of the families represented there, (I would say 95%) want their children to have a Bible based, Christ centered education. No one I ever met there was trying to escape integration. The people running the school were excellent examples of how to walk in the excellency of the knowledge of Christ, and how to maintain a Christian world view in all areas of life. The school is pretty small, and retains a family oriented atmosphere. Lots of parental involvement. Now....
In 2005 we put all 4 of our children in the Clinton Public School District. I was so amazed at how well run the schools were, the quality, knowledge, experience and good Christian example of every teacher my children had there. I did not realize how fine-honed the school district was in finding and retaining the best teachers, what an excellent curriculum they had, and how they made sure that your child would succeed.
The elementary school, Eastside, was so great for my son. I loved every teacher that worked with him. They were so organized, it was very easy for him to keep up with his lessons. The teachers all had so much individual, and accumulative experience, that teaching methods were very 'on spot' for each child. They had what the child needed, no matter where he was in each subject.
The Sumner Hill 9th grade was amazing. I know I sound over the top, but I think that they should somehow package how they run that school, and get it all over the nation.
They absolutely will not let anyone fail. If someone does, it is simply because they will not do the work. The year before my child attended, out of a school of 500+ students, only 3 or 4 failed. If they see your child struggling, they pull them out of extracurricular activities and put them in an extra class till grades improve. Teacher or student tutoring is available daily. They don't allow any suggestive clothing, behavior or music, either at school or during school functions. Parents are very involved here also.
I did not have any children in the high school before we moved. My niece attends there and is a Senior. She has been offered several scholarships. There are a lot of former Mt. Salus students there, who attended Mt. Salus until their 9th grade year. They are all top of the line students. Something like 90% of the graduating seniors go on to 4 year college. And it's not because they run every bad student off before high school, as some schools do. (so their averages look better)
Oh yes. My children who attended the Mt. Salus high school, had great teachers too.
My oldest really excelled, and was able to leave and go to college before she was Senior. (she went to Hinds, and made great grades, but has moved out of state with us now, and is working) Another student did the same, and went on to Mississippi College.
I think that you won't go wrong either route. Or some of both routes. It really depends on your child, and how much you want to 'shelter' him/her, before they get out of the greenhouse into the real world. I think that the public schools in Clinton do a great job of really caring for your child, and helping them succeed, from what we experienced also. If your child might have a tendency to go with the wrong croud, I would put them at Mt. Salus for sure. Not that there is a lot of 'wrong croud' at Clinton., but there are always a few bad apples. But we never experienced any of that at Mt. Salus, because it is so small.
