From Michigan to Meridian
I'm seriously thinking about coming to Meridian, but am afraid I do not know much about the area. What is crime like around there? What does the job market look like around there? Are the people friendly to northerners? How is the college? By the way, i'd be coming down on about 1.5k.

Crime is not a problem if you know where not to be after dark. I don't know if the "job market" can be answered without knowing what industry or field you're talking about. According to bestplaces.net, generic "job" growth is predicted to be 21.45% over the next 10 years. People are pretty friendly in general--more so than most places--but obviously it depends on where you want to meet people. You'd probably get a warmer welcome at a church than a biker bar. The college is good for a community college--nothing like most universities. But if you graduate from a Lauderdale County high school, you get two free years at MCC, so if you're wondering for your kids' sake, that's a good deal.

I am from Iowa and moved to Meridian myself a year ago. Meridian is a town that is a little far behind in the times. It is very hot!! I don't want to say the job market is bad but if you are looking for something new, don't look in the newspaper. Nothing there. Alot of jobs you will find are from someone you know and not whats published. Meridian has a nice park in town and the city itself seems to be growing. There is a group of people in that town who seem to own most of the money so what they say, goes. I hate to sound bad but I have moved to Tupelo (NW MS) and it is much nicer here. Meridian has no bars, or clubs. Bible belt city. It's not for me but could be for you! Once again, not to sound bad but you may rethink moving here unless you have a great job op there. Sorry to be Debbie Downer but I am ready to move back north again! Hope this helps!!

I think moving from Michigan to Meridian, MS would involve culture shock for which you are not prepared. If you career (not your job) takes you there, go! Otherwise consider Texas, the economy is strong and it is an economically progressive state.

Meridian is a great family town. There are a lot of job oppurtunities there depending on what you are looking for. Meridian has a lot of festivals, a mall, and tons of family owned shops (great clothing stores) It is a southern town so it will be a change of life I would think. Growing up there I stayed busy with sports and school. There are good and bad parts of town. I would live outside of meridian if you moved there. (county areas) Hope this helps!
