I’ve noticed as I’ve driven through the state that the only highways that have mile markers are the interstates. This is kind of concerning, as here in GA they are valuable in cases of road emergencies for letting others know where you are. How come MS doesn’t put mile markers on their US highways and state routes? Also, do y’all think they should consider doing this?

There are mile markers on our US highways. What part of the state were you driving?

US 82 between the AL state line and Winona, as well as MS Route 12 through Starkville.

I think you are right. I travel US 82 all the time for Mississippi State games and events, and I don't remember ever seeing mile markers.

The highway exit numbers serve as mile markers.

I don't think that's accurate. I checked the Winona/Duck Hill, Eupora, and Starkville/Hwy 25 exits on Google street view. None of them have exit numbers or mile markers, only highway and/or town names... at least for highway 82. I didn't check any other highways.

ahhh, I misread the thread and thought he was only referring to interstate highways. Clearly me not paying attention.
But, I don't know if there is a state by state consensus on mile markers is there?

I’ve seen the same thing too. It’s concerning because if there was a road emergency, you wouldn’t have an immediate reference to tell someone, “Hey, I’m at mile marker (blank)”. You’d have to generalize where you are. This is something not very good to do, as following directions to getting somewhere without a physical reference location-wise is hard to do.

I can agree with that. If someone knows the area they may know "I am about 13 miles west of Eupora" which is still an imprecise measurement, but a visitor that doesn't know the area may not know what is nearby or if they are east, west, north, or south of a city or landmark.

I do the same, and can't remember seeing more than the occasional mile markers on state highways. Interstate highways do, of course.
