NWS: Tried to rep you for your last comment, but for some reason, I couldn't. Have I already? What you write is true, very true. Although I now live in TX for economic reasons, as you stated, and while there are some instances of negativism in my childhood having been raised in the Delta, I have nothing but great comments and respect about the State in whole, as well as the folks who live there, and who move there. Good post, Sir? Ma'am?

The area that we will be living in is the Natchez/Port Gibson/Vicksburg area. Thank you for all of the answers and I appreciate everyone's opinion.

Well given a choice I would pick Natchez or Vicksburg. I don't think you will have any problems in those towns. They have large racially diverse populations for that area. Some have complained about lack of things to do there but that depends on what your into. I've been to the casinos in Vicksburg and a few restaurants with some friends from that area and I felt very comfortable.
If you get any negative comments I think it's because many here never experienced anything like what your talking about and they have lived here all their lives. They weren't raised like that and they hate racism as much as you do.
Come spend some time in both towns. You will be surprised how nice they and the people are and how much home you can get for the money.

Nancy if you have lived in Mississippi part or all of your life it may seem like a sad question.

I do know that Long Island is one of the most racially segregated areas in the entire nation . There is very little intermingling of the races. Towns are usually 95% black or 95% white . It is far more separate than Mississippi or any Southern state.

I'm Mississippi born and bred, but have lived outside my state and can honestly say that people are people, no matter where they are.

I'm sorry you have to come on and ask questions like this, but completely understand. And don't worry, we are not offended!

I finally got to visit Vicksburg a couple of years ago and found it to be quite charming. Just like any other town except it is on the Mississippi River bluffs, which I would find facinating if I lived there.

I do believe you will find you are welcomed in any neighborhood you relocate to as long as you come with a warm, friendly attitude. It is what is in a persons heart that means so much.

Welcome, I hope you find a great neighborhood and get settled in quickly.
