Campgrounds in Vicksburg
My husband and I are looking for campgrounds around the Vicksburg area. Without offending anyone I would like to know what Vicksburg is like. I have been doing some reading on the web and it sounds like Vicksburg is a heavily populated African American town. My husband and I are both white and grew up in an area that had very few African Americans. I would like to hear from people that know the area, I don’t want to base anything on what I see on the news or read on some hate forum. I guess what I am wanting to know is:
What is the crime like?
Are people friendly?
I don’t care what color a persons skin is, I don’t want to stay someplace where I have to sleep with a shotgun and have a pistol tied to my hip while I am washing dishes or watching TV during the day.
Again please don’t be offended by what I am asking it is just that I have not been around much and the news only tells the bad things.
IL Country Girl.

You will find most people in Vicksburg very friendly. Just avoid telling them you heard bad things about their city on the "hate forums" you frequent.

I do not frequent hate forums. I was researching Vicksburg and found a forum. I could care less what color a persons skin is, a bad person is a bad person.
Thank you for letting me know that you have a nice town. I look forward to visiting.

Hi Country Girl! I live and work in Vicksburg and it is a great town. People call it 'The Red Carpet City of the South'. It is not heavily populated with African Americans. I would say it is about 60% white at the very least. Also, Vicksburg has the most Engineers per capita of any city in the US. Our lovely town boasts the Waterways Experiment Station (ERDC) Engineering Research Development, The Mississippi River Commission and The Lower Mississippi Valley Division - all US Government entities. It is a very quaint town, some cool galleries a coffee shop or two as well as a terrific National Military Park. We have a recently developed 'Catfish Row' on our waterfront with a cool art park, wonderful riverfront murals, splash fountain and plans for a transportation museum. Crime here is really not that bad. I live right in the downtown area and we have (knock on wood) never been touched by it. There are certainly places you do not want to be late at night, but that is in any town. I think you will love Vicksburg. I went to college in Charleston, SC and came right on back home afterward. You will enjoy your stay!

Warren County may be 60% white (although I doubt it), but Vicksburg itself is heavily black. Violent crime doesn't seem to be a big issue there, mostly thefts, burglaries, drugs. I grew up in Vicksburg and I still have family there. It is actually a very boring town if you live there. If you visit, it can be a lovely town for a day or two.
Waterfront hotels, check out Washington Street near I-20. There's a LaQuinta there on the bluff. Rainbow has a hotel down by the river, but the one at the old Isle of Capri probably is the most scenic, right on the river and you can see the bridge easily.
Vicksburg is known for some of its bed and breakfasts, but it really doesn't have much to offer as far as restaurants go. We always go to Jackson when we're up there. There are only a handful of places I would even consider eating at in V'burg, but I would recommend the drive to Jackson where there is much more diverse choice.
I will say that I was shocked at how bad people drive up there now. They seem to like running red lights especially.
I will also say that downtown has come a long way since I was living there, but the city doesn't have any night life minus the casinos. But then again, it's only a city of about 25K, some engineers, and mostly retirees, plus Jackson is 45 minutes away.

I just wanted to let everyone know that I have been in Vicksburg for a couple of months now. It is a lovely place, all the people have been very friendly. Just goes to show you never believe everything you see on the news.
