You helped a lot thanks so much!

Hello! I grew up in Meridian,MS along with my entire family. It is a good palce to raise a family (as most Mississippi towns) Meridian has more to do than most places in Mississippi and it isn't far from some fun places( Birmingham, Beaches, casinos, etc) I did get bored some growing up there. It's growing and has a lot of oppurtunities and my whole family loves it! There are a lot of things for children to do there. Sports are big, dancing and gymnastics, the colleges there have summer programs for kids too. Hope tihs helps!

Hi amywll,
I actually signed up on this forum today to post here. I did not read your whole post, sorry. I will post on what I did read. My husband and I both grew up here in Meridian, MS. It is a small peacefull town although recently and still in the process of growing. About 10+ years ago Meridian built a much needed mall. The other mall was made of asbestes and still stands because of the risk of tearing it down. The old mall is pretty much an eyesore at this point. Recently and still growing is the new Meridian Crossroads. It is a shopping center by the mall. Sorry to we have one mall and one medium shopping center. We have 2 Super Wal-Marts and 1 Sam's Wholesale Club.
Meridian is a safe place to live as long as you live outside of downtown and the surrounding area. Meridian's downtown is a joke for the most part.
Meridian's transportation is the Taxi and maybe, maybe a bus. If Meridian has a bus it probably has only 1, not sure. I definatly recommend getting a car. That's really the only way to get around.
There are not alot of things to do here. With that said I am pretty much a home body. My idea of fun is hoping on a 4-wheeler and riding in the mud. Yeap there are rednecks here. Meridian is not one of those towns that people dress up in. It's pretty much shorts and a t-shirt.
Meridian is a great place to retire. It's peacefull and cozy. People here are friendly. It is a small town.
We have 3 post offices. One downtown, one on the west side, and one in north meridian. North Meridian is the by far the best area.
There are small communities outside of Meridian that are nice. Alot of people like Collinsville, which is north of Meridian. The school out there is West Lauderdale. Some say it is the best. Clarkdale is also great. Clarkdale is south. The school is good too. Clarkdale has good down to earth people.
Yes Meridian is a family town. It is a great place to raise a family. I hope this helps. Any questions, I will be glad to help ya with. Good Luck

. The Meridian Little Theatre has adult plays and children plays if your kids would enjoy that. I know MCC puts on a kids college in the summer (different programs for kids I use to take the cooking and computer ones when I was little) There are all types of sports for kids to be involved with along with gymnastics and dance. I forgot to add this earlier

AmyWill5918 I am also moving from albuquerque to Meridian. I am in the Air Force and will be the new Air Force Recruiter there. It would be nice to be able to talk to someone else from albuquerque. I also share your views about the crime there, I grew up in a small town and am looking forward to getting back to one.

Hi everybody - thanks for all the detailed answers. Fornters - have you moved yet, my toddler and I will prolly be moving this spring - a slight delay. I too am looking forward to a small town. I think I'm going to look for a rental in Dalewood Shores so that I can work on base - get the same hours as either as either my mother in law or sister in law and be able to hitch a ride.

If you've already moved let me know what you think. Maybe I'll see you around base. I'm hoping to get a job with the contracter called Symantec. Its where my sister in law works. I should make more then enough money to rent a house on the lake, rentals are slightly less then albuquerque and much less then Maryland!
