Folks,

Thank-you for all the feedback through these forums - - just another data point for me - - everyone is entitled to their opinion and I love hearing the pros and cons of different areas.

Late next week I will be driving through Mississippi - -

I want to see the best that these places have to offer: Tupelo, Meridian, Hattiesburg, Jackson & Vicksburg.

I am wide open for suggestions. Imagine it this way - - you get one chance to "impress" a visiting friend - - you want your community to send a positive vibe - - what should I make sure that I see? Likewise - - what should I avoid?

If there is a particular park or street or restaurant or other point of interest - - please let me know.

I am working today and tomorrow on my trip - I appreciate any feedback that you may have.

Thanks ever so much ~ ~

well you need to come down to the coast, come down 49 to hwy 90,
go east to biloxi, notice damage to everything south of tracks,
have dinner at beau rivage at buffet, but before 5pm, or you will stand in line for 45 min. best food at casino I think!
when leaving casino, stop by roasted bean for cup of coffee to go.
(forgot to tell you to park on very top of garage, walk to southern edge, look at islands and boats.)
make sure you drive to end of 90, ( couple miles ) where bridge was.
then go back west to I-110 to get back to I-10.
bring a camera.....

hmm well Meridian has things like the Jimmie Rodgers museum and the brand new Riley Center. We have carousel horses located all around town with drifferent names for each one. They are painted all different kinds of ways. They are very interesting. Local artist have painted them. We also have Highland park which is very beautiful and located at the park is one of the oldest/only carousels in MS. As far as restaraunts, there are many to choose from. There are several places to eat in our historic downtown and then located around the mall area are many places like Applebees, Outback, O'Charleys, Red Lobster, and McCalisters.

What a wonderful way to frame a question! Good post! I recently saw the carousel in Meridian and I ditto it as a special opportunity. Meridian also has Merrehope, a southern mansion, to visit. As far as restaurants--I would suggest Weidemann's(sp?) in downtown area. It is a tradition, not a chain, and very good. Now, when you get to Hattiesburg do not miss the Armed Forces Museum at Camp Shelby off of HWY 49. Camp Shelby is where troops train for Iraq--very big operation and the museum is a gem! Also, if it is a nice day and you want to walk a bit, the zoo on Hardy St. would be nice. It had serious Katrina damage but could be getting back into shape. Hattiesburg has lots of restaurants and the downtown area heading east on Hardy from HWY 49 (this would take you past the zoo) would be nice for walking and checking out antiques, the Main Street bookstore, the cafe in the New Yokel Market, or the Walnut Street Pharmacy for an ice cream. There are several dining spots there. However, the best place in town, in my opinion, would be either the Purple Parrot or Crescent City on Hardy St. going west from HWY 49 past the university. Both are in the same building with Crescent City being the more informal. Also going out 98 west (Hardy St.) is a restaurant that is new which I have no personal knowledge about, but I have heard from others that it is special. It is on the expensive side but worth it, I hear, but I can't personally vouch for it. It is called Carribbean Soul and you can get directions at the gas stations on Hardy St. going west. It might be a unique experience. There is a vistor's center as you come into town on HWY 49 at the Lake Terrace Convention Center where you might get better directions and some other suggestions. Have fun!

Not sure of your schedule, but you can travel from Tupelo down the Natchez Trace to Jackson, or actually all the way to Natchez. If you are interested in history, I would visit Vicksburg, then drive south to Natchez. You can stop and see the famous Windsor Ruins on the way.
If you decide to drive from Tupelo to Meridian, Columbus has many old Antebellum homes, 2nd only to Natchez.

Not a big fan of Meridian, or Hattiesburg, not a whole lot to see in either of those places.
